Here's a few tips
- always make flashcards for each unit's vocab (you can color code them) Don't throw them away, review them on the bus, before the movie starts, whenever
- each day review the exercises you did in class in addition to your assigned homework and even if you have no homework
- then look ahead a few pages of your current unit/ lesson or look ahead at the previous unit/ lesson. Try to understand it all, don't just passively read it. Make a note of what is unclear. Write down clarification questions
- sit towards the front of your class so you can hear your teacher clearly and watch his/ her mouth move when he/ she speaks
- try to answer at least one question (raise your hand) per exercise in class. Take the initiative no matter how unsure you feel or how many mistakes you make. Class time should be your "practice" time b/c later you'll have to do the homework on your own and can't be corrected till the next day
- find a native Spanish speaker to speak Spanish with, even if you are just rehearsing sentences from your homework
- if all else fails hire a tutor

Spanish is a piece of cake! just dont confuse it with english, the prob is that people try to tranlate when thats not it, you know what would help? watch movies in spanish! it will increase your understanding, you can even listen to music in spanish, try to sing it and understan what it means.
