been watching uk tv tonight about an obese boy
last week it was all about size zero models and anorexia surely by now everybody should be left to do what ever they want without relying on the doctors to "give them something" to put it right
i must confess i am a smoker with some heart problems but up to now not been refused any treatment but if i was i feel i would accept it and not complain it was our govt.s fault for not looking after us comments please

i too am a smoker but till now i have remained pretty healthy. i have always worked and paid my way, so i would be very angry if i didnt get care in later life. my taxes and national insurance contributions over the years have more than paid for health treatment i think.
as for the skinny / obese thing i think there is enough education these days for people to steer clear of these conditions. i started smoking in the mid 70's when it wasn't such an issue. no excuse i know, as we all know the consequences now but there is no excuse for being thin as a rake or fat as a pig. eat or stop eating so much rectifies the problem easier than giving up an addiction.

Sorry pal I think the medical profession as a whole have always had an obligation to try and help people be as healthy as they can. The old adage 'Prevention is better than cure' has always been true. Now however when so much of the disease we see, and the pieces we MUST pick up, are due to self inflicted wounds. Smoking, obesity, alcohol and illegal drugs, probable result is at least half the disease we see and are expected to try and fix, its doubly valid.

It is also in a civilised society part of a government's duty to safeguard it's citizens. So they have a duty to advise as well.

Personally I would much rather advise a 20 year old overweight smoker to loose weight and stop smoking, than have to cut off his leg at 40 years because he is a diabetic with vascular disease!

they wont stop treating you as they still get a lot of tax from smokers and you are right if they really wanted people to stop they would ban all imports of tobacco
