If you are just starting out you may want to try something a little less tricky that doesn't require so many added things like thinners and turpintine and not as expensive. Acrylics are good, Basics is a good brand and for the quality, they are cheap and alot of times you can buy a beginner set. Also look for books that can help you either in store or at a library. Buy a few types of brushes on the cheeper side so that you can find the one you like best, I perfer the softer bristles but a few stiffer ones are good for different textures. You can take classes if this is for serious selling and whatnot, but just to relieve stress or for fun it is great to just jump in and see what comes out! As you go on you will discover that if you stroke this way... it looks like this and so on. It is fun to discover how to do things on your own. I am self tought from childhood and now i sell paintings for around $150.00 as an unknown (just starting to sell) that are personalized, no schooling except for regular school. But I have been at it a long time! Anyway Like I said if you are really serious to sell or get really good as fast as you can, though i think that natural talent should be left as that, make it more interesting.. has it's downfalls though starting late. Take classes. If you have big chain arts and craft stores like Micheals and AC Moore you might be able to take a painting class there for cheeper then other places. Be careful though it is mostly one stroke not portraits and whatnot, but it can be useful. You can also ask people in the stores you buy your supplies for if they or someone else is into painting with oil or acrylic and they can probably help you get started with the right supplies and maybe even some advice or places to take classes around your area.

If you want to have a career as a professional artist you will need to be trained in painting and drawing techniques. Atelier art schools have the most intensive training in these areas. The New School of Classical Art is a recommended one and was recently rated in the top ten by E-Zine.

You might want to buy a good 'how to' oil painting book too. Check Amazon.com reviews on some of these books. Kevin MacPherson has two books that I think are the best.

There is also an Interactive Art School online:

Kinda, you could do that on how you feel. Just start painting. Just might have the stuff ready instead of buying it all at once. Have them at home for when you have an idea or feeling.

paint what you like but i prefer acrylics paints as they don't require turps to clean them.
Don't leave good brush in water
And prue vegetable oil soap is great to clean even hard brushes.

sure, why not? you don't have to take classes to paint, but they can help with technique. also you might learn how to do different things and have someone (the teacher) to help with problems.
