No, you don't. Driving into Canada will not be affected NOW or in the near future. It is your "entry or re-entry" to the USA which is affected. In your case, driving, will not require a passport until January 2008. (flying took effect January 23, 2007)

This is from the Passport Canada website, and should clear up a lot of confusion regarding going to Canada:

Will travellers need a passport to enter or re-enter Canada?
Canadian entry requirements have not changed. If you are Canadian, you do not need a passport to enter or re-renter Canada.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) is a new American law that requires, for now, that all AIR travellers, including Canadians, carry a valid passport, or a Nexus Air Card when travelling to the United States from within the western hemisphere including Canada.

Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security requires that airlines demand that traveler present a valid passport, or a Nexus Air Card to board a plane.

The U.S. Government has assured Canada that it is not the intention of WHTI or APIS to prevent Canadians from returning to Canada

If you are an American Citizen and are driving you can cross into Canada and back again with proper ID.
If you are a citizen but originally from somewhere else I would suggest travelling with proof of citizenship.

Americans traveling to Canada for pleasure (tourism) don't require visas. If you are coming to work or to study, then you need a visa.

Or did you mean passport? You don't need a passport when driving to Canada until next year. A birth certificate and drivers license will do.
