My wife just got her first job last December. The company accountant said that I could file jointly and get 2 standard deductions (10,300). I've been trying free filing from IRS (eligible for under 52K per year) but I can't seem to get 2 standard deductions

10,300.00 is the standard deduction for Married filing Jointly
the standard deduction for Married Filing separately is 5,150.00.

You do not claim 10,300.00 twice

He was probably talking about claiming 2 exemptions

When you file a joint return, you get ONE standard deduction. The value of the standard deduction for a married couple filing jointly is $10,300. When you select the filing status Married Filing Jointly, that standard deduction amount will automatically be applied. You will also get 2 personal exemptions, one for each of you.

You'll need to get your wife's W2 before you can file.

Your wife's employment should not stop you from filing jointly.

Standard deductions are given for Dependants. Given that you wife worked, she's not a Dependant. However, because she worked for about 8% of the year, you'd like to get at least 92% of the deduction, huh?

Unfortunately, this is not how it works.

Ask the company accountant how this is supposed to work. Maybe he knows something I don't.
