I have been sneezing all day, getting chilled, my nose has been either running or stopped up since I woke up this morning. I feel weak as well, but it isn't a full-blown cold (yet) Is there anything I can do to ward it off? If not, then what can I do to make it go away faster? Lots of Vitamin C, I have been drinking a lot of juices. Anything else? Thanks in advance.

Hi there! I am an ER nurse, and we see tons of this around this time of year. Colds are typically caused by a virus, so you just have to ride out the symptoms, unfortunately. If it doesn't go away, you start running a high temprature, or you notice green or bloody sputum, you should see your doctor. You may need an antibiotic, because those can be signs of a bacterial infection.

Over the counter there are some remedies that claim to make your cold go away faster. I noticed some people mentioned zicam lozenges. There is also a nose spray available that people claim speeds up their recovery. I don't know how much is fact or fiction, because in reality, you will get over it eventually anyway. Your body just has to make enough antibodies to overcome the infection. Lots of rest, lots of fluids, and eat balanced foods, as much as you can tolerate. Good nutrition will boost your immune system. Also, a little footnote...you can't really overdose on vitamin C. However, you can cause symtpoms of scurvy if you take a bunch of it and then go off of it suddenly. If you decide to quit taking the vitamin C, do it in a gradual steps, so you don't cause yourself some discomfort.

Good luck to you! God bless.

I don't know if this worked for me because it actually worked or because I was just not ever going to get really sick .... BUT..

Last week I was coming down with a cold (icky feeling in throat, tired, achy) and I took Zicam lozenges (follow directions on package exactly), lots of fluid and rest and only felt mildly icky for 3 days and then was fine.

Good Luck.

Go to a pharmacy or something, find N-Acetyl Cysteine pills. It's an amino acid that's already naturally in your body, but taking more of it really seriously helps make the cold much milder.

Take 1000mg of vitamin C every couple of hours. Make some chicken soup and add lots of garlic to it.

drink lots of fluids, get enough sleep, eat well i.e. healthy food , and get a nonsedating antihistamine to feel better until you become fine again because viral infections need time .
