They just dont want to get hurt. And one way to get hurt is to let them know your easy, and playing hard to get will make them think you dont think they are.

The thinking that when things come to us too easily, we don't appreciate it as much. Girls usually have this idea because they have been told that men like *the chase*. We hv been told that men lose interest or are scared away if a girl is too easy. (honestly, I have seen that happen actually so there is some truth to it) But I have seen men playing hard to get too.
I personally don't like such games. With someone we are meant to be with, we'd never hv to do such things.

Because their shy and won't flirt just make eye contact. I think I play hard to get but it's not my fault im shy... :(
