I started both of my sons on 2% milk at the age of 9 months - about the same time I started training them with a sippy cup. you have to make sure they get enough calcium because there bones are still hardening up to age 9 - yes 9! Start with the 2% and watch the child's stools. If they are hardened but not constipating him/her, then move up to whole milk after a week or so. I hope this helps!

it's not recommended to start children on whole milk until they are 1 year old because they still need all of the vitamins in the formula. So I wouldn't suggest giving him any milk until he is ready. At one year you have a few options, you can start adding a little milk to his formula and upping the ounces of milk you add while lowering the ounces of formula over a few weeks until he's on all milk. Or you can swap out bottles, say he gets 4 bottles of formula a day, you can do 3 formula and one whole milk, ect. But make the transition slow so his tummy has time to adjust and to make sure he isn't allergic to milk. I would seriously talk to your pediatrician before starting him on whole milk, especially at 8 months, that is 4 months before the recommended time.

Doctors recommend 12 months. I started giving my kids milk at 11 months. However I did 1/2 formula 1/2 milk, for the first month to see how they handled it. They did fine.

They should be at least 1 year old. That first year they are getting almost all of their nutrients from breast milk or formula, and cows milk doesn't have everything an infant needs. Also, it's distressing to their stomache and can cause milk allergies. Just wait 4 more months before you start. Then slowly ease him into it, like you talked about above.

12 months is standard. Before that, the baby's digestive system is not developed enough for the complexity of cow's milk. I would hold off until baby is at least 11 months, then possibly start the transition from formula/Breastmilk to cow's millk. Waiting has been proven to reduce the amount of allergies to milk in children and reduction of instances of GI problems.
If you do give them mikl, use whole milk, not 2%...the fats are necessary to brain development. The standard is whole milk dairy products until age 2.

I wouldn't start a child on cow's milk before 1 yr. Their digestive system is still developing and it may not be able to handle it. If you feel the need to give your son some cow's milk, I wouldn't give him more than a few ounces, 3-4 ozs., a day.

I could be totally off base, just my humble opinion of being a Mom.

WIC recommends that you have your child switched over to whole milk by the time they are 12 months old. I started mixing formula and whole milk together at about 10 months and had him on whole before he was 12 months.

You switch them at one year of age or when the doctor tells you too but don't switch all of a sudden cause that will cause major constipation.
Start halfing it following up til he is a year old (start at 10-11 months old)
Half whole milk/half formula until you get it to nothing but whole milk.

With my first I waited untill she was 1. But with my second I started her out with half whole milk half water at 9 months. She did just fine. I also have a friend who did the same thing but at 8 months. I think its safe as long as your child doesnt have any allergies.

Most doctors prefer to give babies regular milk at one year. It might be too rough for their digestive systems before that and they may become constipated (sooo difficult to watch your baby going through that).

I just tried a small amount of milk and watched how the stools were affected. If it dosn't seem to bother your baby, kick the formula at one year.
