If so, how and what branch of the military?

It's not me. I know this real patriotic young man that is 20 years old. He would like to join but he dropped out of high school.

Yes.

However, it's not easy. While you can enlist into any branch of the US armed forces without having a high school diploma, you must have a GED. In addition, you should be aware that only a small percentage of overall enlistees will be allowed entry in the military with only a GED each year.

The Air Force allows less than one percent of annual enlistments to be recruits without a high school diploma. The Marines have the next highest standards. No more than five percent of Marine recruits can be GED-holders. The Army allows no more than ten percent each year, and the Navy limits GED enlistments to no more than five to ten percent each year.

There are always many, many more GED-holders who want to enlist than there are available slots, so -- even to be considered -- a GED holder must score much higher on the ASVAB, than a high school diploma recruit.

However, if a recruit has 15 or more college credits, he/she is in the exact same enlistment category as a high school diploma holder.

Fast track citizenship is available through military service IF you're already a green card holder. But they won't accept you into the army without a green card. There is usually room for exception in immigration matters if there's an outstanding situation to convince the immigration authorities, but it's unlikely to be applied to a case involving the army. If you're a native/fluent speaker of a language that American soldiers often deal with (Arabic, Urdu, etc.), then there might be a very remote possibility, but I doubt an Irish man would have a command of any such language.

GED slots are hard to come by in all the Branches. you must score a 50 on the ASVAB( as opposed to a 35). you will be limited in what job fields you can get. you will most likely NOT be eligible for any bonuses. if he doesn't even have that, his chances drop even further.

The Army is currently accepting the most GED holders.

but one semester's worth of 100 level college classes elevate a GED to a HS diploma, and all those restrictions go away.

You can join any service with a GED, they may open it up again and train a FEW who must get a GED before they finish basic training.
Back in the 80's The Army did it for a FEW like a hundred a year, it was really hard work, guys trained with us from 0600 to 1700 then they went to school from 1730 to 2100 3 days a week.
He needs to go to school before he joins.

It depends on the branch and the military occupational skill.

It is possible to enlist with a GED, but his choices will be limited.

if you get your GED, but you have to also score an 50 on the ASVAB and not all services will accept you the percentage of people with only a GED in the service is very low, and the army is the one most likely to accept you!

Yes, but you'd probably need a waiver of some sort.

That's how the Navy works at least.
