There are many different types of cancer, but "cancer" actually refers to cells that have mutated and become special types of viruses. The problem with viruses is (a) there is no known cure for any type of virus, and (b) they continue to multiply and mutate, and when they do that they literally eat other types of cells. Cancer cells can be very aggressive in destroying other cells, or they can lay dormant for years at a time and then literally come alive for no apparent reason and start attacking the body. Certain cancers can be treated by surgery to remove them, chemotherapy to destroy them, and radiation therapy to eradicate them, and in many cases a person can become "cancer free' after such treatments. But once the cancer growths reach a certain point, there's nothing that can be done to reverse it and nothing that can be done to save the life of the person with the cancer. See why we're trying to find a cure?

cancer is the term for cells which have been altered or mutated and begin to replicate (copy themselves) over and over again uncontrollably.
cancer is destructive because over time, those cells multiply so much they form masses (tumors) and begin to take nutrients away from the body in order to feed the tumorous cells. so in essence, a cancerous cell sucks the body dry.
