I've just started going to the gym 4-5x a week in order to reach my goal of losing 50lbs and gaining definition to my midsection and upper arms. I'd like suggestions on what exercises (besides cardio) I should focus on.

Cardio! lose the fat first. Crunches and situps won't get rid of that beergut. they will just give you a nice layer of muscle underneath.
