a few days ago i asked a question on whether i did the right thing about calling the cops to come get a stray dog i found. on saturday, i figured out who the owners were. they happen to be a good friend of my mother's. there has to be something wrong at the dog's home cuz everyday he runs away from his home. he always ends up at our house. we always take him back. i am thinking that these people treat their dog terribly. what should i do about this. everytime they come to get him. they start swearing at him and yelling at him. i cant for the life of me figure out y they r punishing the dog for their mistakes. obviously this dog has never been trained right. do u have any tips on i can use to help these people gain the trust and control of their dog again, cuz i would hate to see him get hit by a car and die cuz they dont contain him.

also remember that i cant take the dog. he is always pulling back towards our house when they come and get him. i think because he has seen what the good life is like and he doesnt want to go back to a place where he isnt loved. i am good friends with the kids and my guess is that they were excited about him for about a week and then they just ignored him and didnt care about him anymore, cuz its always the parents that are coming to get him. and they always r saying i am going to kill that dog, and he wont be theirs for much longer. it think this is a much bigger thing then the dog just running and them punishing it

i remember your question. see, you did really well.
there is really no other training for humans. you can go look for training for dogs and maybe suggest it to the owners. these types of people will not change.
if you want, ask if you can walk the dog. he's bored and needs attention.
yes, that would be a great idea. help train the dog and make it enjoyable for both him and the owner. who knows, you may end up getting that dog from them.

Please note that I am defending the owners or you. I am just asking that you try to get all of the facts first. Some dogs just love to run. It doesn't matter that they have the best home in the world. Ask any husky breeder (who keeps their dogs as pets; not kennel bound money making machines) and they'll tell you the same (huskies are notorious for running because that is what they were bred to do). Many breeds are like this and owners should know this about the breed before getting the dog.
I have a shepherd who also likes to hop the fence for a nice run (this is the reason her last owners gave her up but they DID starve her so at that time she may have been looking for food) and I have found that it really helps to take her places where we can hike without her being leashed (she is obedient and comes when called). She gets to release a ton of energy, take in a few sites and smells, and just have a good time being a dog. Maybe you could suggest the owners of this dog do the same or if he's friendly and trained they could exercise him at a dog park. Lack of exercise will make any high energy dog want to run and who could blame them? If they do take the dog hiking, please ask them to clean up after him.
The owners may be yelling at the dog because they were worried about its safety the same as a human mother sometimes yells at a child for running into the street. They do need to quit leaving this dog outside alone as he obviously has a tendancy to leave. Have you suggested a sonic fence or something along those lines? I have never used one and cannot say how well they work but I have heard good things if the dog is not extremely determined to escape.
Now if these people are constantly yelling at him at home, if they beat him, starve him, never play with him, or leave him outside all the tim, no wonder he runs away! If this is the case, maybe they will let you have him if it is okay with your mom?
BTW My own escape artist is never outside alone for her safety. I just have to make time to get her properly exercised with my supervision. Owners of dogs like this just have to realize that they are a bit more work than a dog that happily stays in the yard. Hopefully these owners will do so but, if not, find a no-kill shelter that will take him if you can't.
*** In regards to your follow-ups: It sounds like they are just horrible owners. Call the humane society. They do get fined everytime this dog is caught and returned, especially if it doesn't have identificaton. Some places require outward identification other than a tattoo and some will allow only a microchip but I seriously doubt these people have that. After enough fines, they'll stop taking him home. After being caught loose enough, animal control may not allow them to have him back depending on city laws. There really isn't anything you can do about them. If they will let you play with the dog, walk him, train him, or anything else that will improve his life then please do it. He deserves better than a life where his owners constantly say they want to kill him. I am assuming that this is not a playful comment of course. I playfully tell mine they're evil and such but it's during games when the monsters try to cheat (I have smart dogs who like to find a way to cheat to win). Nothing at all is meant by it. There's no chance that the owners are doing the same, is there? ***

If they are swearing and yelling at him, then be sure to keep a watch for any bumps on the dog. If they hit him hard or often, it can be a cause to call the lovely people at the ASPCA.
Just because the dog runs away, it doesn't necessarily mean they're mistreating him. I remember a Golden in my neighborhood as a kid that always came over to our house for food when he was on a diet.
If you are worried about him getting hit by a car, you can talk to the owner about getting proper fencing or a long lead. If they continue to let him roam, you have grounds to at least give your local ASPCA a ring to notify them. Explain the problem and they can determine if they need to check on it.
Recently, there was a little dog in my neighborhood named Football who was hit and killed by a car because his owners didn't patch an obvious hole in their fence. If you think this could happen to this dog, don't hesitate to call.

Sounds like this dog needs to be re-homed to one that can take the time to train and care for him properly. I was going to say that just because the dog "escapes" daily it doesn't mean its being abused. Since you mentioned the cussing and yelling when they do come get him you may be correct about the abuse. I think these people would listen more to instruction from animal control than from you though. Good luck.

this could just be a dog in heat! I have a female that given the chance she will take off and play with the neighbors horses. when i had both male and female weims they would both take off together and not come home til they felt tired or hungry. do you have pets? do you have puppies in or under your house? some dogs are houdini's i use to set up my camcorder just to cautch my dogs in the act. when i had 2 dogs my male was older and taught almost every trick he knew to the female. my male is gone now, but my female can still open the door to the fridge and any room even outside. these are very smart dogs you should keep in mind how some breeds of dogs just find ways around things

Well the reason why they yell at him is because he did somthing wrong and they are trying to teach him that. And you could buy a long leash for them to put their dog outside and tell them that you will help train him. Well I hope that I helped you out Peace!

You must call the SPCA. when a dog has been found to be mistreated then the people who are doing it must be dealt with , the dog never asked to be beaten and swore at its just not fair, i would Call them as soon as you read this (i mean the SPCA).
there are others out there that will take him.
