Is your question in regards to why your dog is digging, or what you can do to stop it?
The "why" question is easily answered easily: your dog is digging because he's bored.
A second cause, in addition, might be that he needs to get more exercise as well, because a well-exercised dog generally goes and lays down when his owners are away. It's his time to relax and take a nap.
I would suggest that you exercise more with your dog. Pitts have a lot of energy and need to be worked both physically (long walks, playing fetch, etc. will accomplish that) but also mentally (obedience training or working on tricks).
I also suggest you give your dog a safe place to go when nobody is home with him, such as a kennel or crate. A crate is the safest place for a dog because it simulates the "den" a wild dog would create. Most crate trained dogs will go into their crate and sleep while their owners are away. Alternatively, a nice outdoor kennel might be a good choice. A proper kennel should have cement flooring for easy clean-up, a safe dog house to keep the dog out of the elements, and things to keep your dog busy with - such as puzzle balls he has to move around to get treats from.
You should not leave your dog outside chained up or loose in a fenced yard if there's nobody there to supervise. Not only can your dog do a lot of damage to your yard, but neighborhood kids might also tease your dog by throwing rocks or sticks at it. (Yes, kids WILL do that!)

That's normal but if he only does when hes alone try spending more time with him and get him some toys. You can also take one part of your yard and fence it off so he can only dig it that area to spare the rest of your yard.

Dogs digging holes in the yard is normal. If he only does it when left alone, he may have separation anxiety.

what exactly do you think he is going to do while left alone ??? he is a dog,,, they dig ,, they chew etc.. if you do not want him to be destructively bored when you are not home,,, crate him inside the house with a chew bone. also,,, you should give him lots of exercise and training.... left alone , unrestrained for many hours, dogs can pick up some very bad habits.... lonliness = boredom=destructiveness and behavioral problems

We had this problem with our Yellow Labs. Dogs dig when they are bored. I would keep your dog in the house or in a crate in the house while you are gone for your yards sake.

The dog is bored and lonely. Get him some toys he can play with by himself...the big ball with the rope attached to it is always good.

Talk to your vet. There may be a separation anxiety problem. If so there may be ways to correct it either with behavior modification, or with medicines like prozac.
