Could be several things.
First off, our bodies shed skin cells.
That is most likely what it is - dead skin cells.
On the other hand, you mention "residue".
Could be your shampoo leaves behind a chemical coating which builds up over time.
If so, use a diluted vinegar rinse every 30 days or so to cut that gunk from your hair.
Lastly, it could be a skin disorder.
If you are o inclined, go see a dermatologist and have them sample the residue to possible problems and a solution.

Because there are things on your scalp like oil and dead or dry skin cell and even perhaps dirt sometimes. So, when you scratch your head you collect these things under your nails.

dead skin. people shed constantly. You notice ot more on your scalp because the hair keeps it from falling off. also you probably use shampoo that leaves debris. If it seems excessive and itches, get and use head and shoulders or selsyn blue. Try different varieties, some has selenium, some has zink. each works differently.

DANDRUFF! Very common issue for many people this time of year. Really scratch your head off when you shower and use Selsun Blue or Neutrogena T-gel if it's really bad.

Dry scalp, aka a mild case of dandruff. Also scrathing exacerbates (makes worse) the problem so firststep is to stop the stratching and it might go away.

Your Scalp is more than likely too oilty.
Try washing your hair more often, and using shampoos for oily hair.
