Cats are their own beings and why they do silly things like drinking out of the toilet is something we will never truly understand. It may be that it is colder, it may be that there is more of it, or your cat may just find it fun to climb on in and take a sip. In any case, take it from someone who worked for a vet close the lid every time. I was personally surprised at the number of cats people found dead in their toilet because they climbed in for a drink and for some reason could not get back out. It may sound sad and off the wall, but its true. I have cats myself and always left the lid up then I heard these stories and changed my mind on the whole thing. Instead when my cat joins me in the bathroom (and it goes with out saying that the water was always clean when the lid was up) I let the water in the sink trickle slowly so that my cats can have a fresh from the tap drink. Try this as an alternative.

It's a cat thing. They just do it. They like a lot of water, and maybe you aren't leaving out enough water, or the water is cooler in the toilet. It shouldn't hurt the cat unless you put a freshner into your toilet.

Some Cats like cooler water most cases they just play in it.
if you find your pet does drink a lot of water, you should have its blood work done they could have diabetes, usually in older cats but make sure they have fresh water in their bowls.

Maybe you need to put a drinking bowl out or your cat thinks it's a dog.

Cats like to hunt for water and drink where they can find it. We leave a cup our for kitty and she drinks from that. (she will drink out of her pet fountain we got from Petsmart for 50 dollars) Try adding ice cubes to your pets bowl daily because they like cold water.

Do you provide her with water? Otherwise it's...flavored. Just keep the lid down or the door shut...even worse, some day she might fall in!
