My neighbor is an older lady with a dog and she lets him run loose. My husband left his muddy and cow-crap covered boots outside our front door on our deck and the dog took them and chewed them all to hell. The boots were leather work boots that he has to have for work and cost 130 dollars and is the only pair he has, and the neighbor sent her 10 year old grand daughter over with them to return them to us, all chewed up and unuseable, with no apology or anything. What is the proper thing for me to do here? I'm not going to yell at her grand daughter, but I can't tolerate them letting their dog run loose when he is going to destroy our things. This is the dog's second offense so far and my husband says if she doesn't pin the dog up, he's going to shoot it (which I won't let him do-) we have a leash law in this town of 100 people, but no one to enforce it. Should I go confront her, or should I just chalk it up to experience and let it be?

I'd ask her to pay for the boots. Tell her, "I know you like to let your dog run loose. I don't mind that as long as you don't mind replacing the things he destroys! If you aren't willing to do that, you do need to contain him or chain him up."

Sounds like you need a mediator for this situation. Contact your local police or Sheriff's department, they will act as your liaison when confronting your neighbor. You must act on this, if not, it will only haunt you in the future. It isn't the dog's fault, it is the fault of the irresponsible owner. Sadly, it is unlikely that you will receive any compensation for your boots.

I'd try to confront her in a nice way. Tell her that her dog came onto your property and destroyed your husband's work boots. Tell her the brand, size, price, etc. and ask her for re-ibursement.

If the dog isn't vicious, I'd try to catch it the next time it came onto your property and then return it to her. At that time, tell her you don't appreciate her dog running lose onto your property and to please control it or you will be forced to take it to the pound the next time you catch it on your property, especially so close to your house.

She should pay for the boots and keep her dog confined to her own yard.
There has to be someone to report this to and get restitution for the boots.
