You have to file. You don't have to pay.

It would be in your best interest to do so.

If you filed a state return in the prior year, and did not file one in the current year, you will get a letter from that state requesting you to either file or why you did not file.

Also, you might have a negative amount appearing within your state return. It is always
advisable to file a return, even if no tax is due, when there might be a loss to be carried forward or carried back. I advise my clients always to file - that way there is no misunderstanding with the state later on, several years from now, when that carryforward or carryback can be applied.

File the return.

Whether or not you have to file is based upon your total income, not whether you have to pay or are getting a refund or are zeroed-out even up with the state.

Check your state's tax depeartmnet website to see if you must file a return.

Hint: If there is any amount other than $0.00 on the "Total Tax" line of your state return, you MUST file the return.

You should file no matter what, it's always good to save your papers and information for the future, so incase there is a mistake with the IRA you can back into your records and correct it.

You need to file anyway. Besides, if any state tax was withheld you'll get it back -- how's THAT for a good reason to file?
