Diapers are probably the most expensive item. Since you are hypothetically living off $50 a week, we won't add formula. Formula is no where near as healthy as breast milk too. So save a buck and help the baby. Oh, and mommy will lose weight faster by nursing.

So, let's see... Diapers are generally $12 a pack and with a newborn you need at least a pack a week. Or you could use cloth diapers...buy a pack of 20. I'm not sure how many come in a pack but it is a whole lot cheaper than plastic diapers. You have to wash them every day, but they're better for baby. Blankets are about $8 a pop, unless you have nice friends who give you some. By the way, when you are discharged from the hospital they usually give you a couple cozy blankets. Let's rest on the fact this hypothetical hospital gave you one, but you had already bought one at Target. Cha-ching, $9 right there. Don't worry, that's a one time buy. Along with the receiving blankets. Five come in a pack... $10. Another one time buy. Baby clothes... Baby grows every month and in the first couple months grows a lot! Sleepers come in packs of three for about $10. Baby doesn't need to be dressed up extravagantly, seeing as baby will soil clothes.

Furniture... That's the really expensive thing. You need a crib and bedding for the crib. Cribs can run anywhere from $100 to a couple hundred $$. You don't buy cribs second hand, please don't. :) Not safe. It's okay if a friend gives a crib in very great condition. It will save you a lot. Ikea has nice cribs for $90+. We'll get you the $90 one. It's white, but it is nice! You don't really need a changing table persay. When my sister had her son, we hardly used the changing table. It was one of those spiffy changing tables hooked onto chest of drawers. A changing table is around $30 or more at IKEA. Really simple ones are really cheap. Ones with dressers hooked on are more. (About $170!!)

I'm not sure what else I can point out to help you. There is also Costco wholesale for buying stuff for babies (diapers, blankies, washcloths, etc) in bulk and usually for a lot cheaper. Often times they have stacks of onesies (something you will also want a lot of because they're easy to put on baby...About $7 for a pack of them!) for good deals.

Babies are expensive and best had when you have more than $50 a week. Like say, out of high school. Kids need to keep their pants on and I see why you have this research paper: to give ya'll an understanding why you're too young to have sex. It's too hard to afford having a baby when you're still a teenager.

There is a great book that has been in circulation for decades called what to expect when you're expecting. There will be a list in there that is great! You can find that book at the library or any goodwill or used book store. Women get rid of them after the baby comes, so you'll find it very easy. Some of the things are somewhat luxurious and a clever person can do without it. For instance, if you were low income, do you really need a changing table? You can use a towel or blanket on the floor. It's harder on your back, but it works. Good luck!

Some essential but overlooked things are a will and life insurance. On a low income you need to distinguish between wants and needs. Breastfeeding will save on formula costs, resale stores will cut yopur costs on furniture and clothing. An outfit at BabyGap may be $50+, the same outfit, same brand in good condition may be $2 at a resale shop. Some car dealerships, hospitals, ect... have car seat giveaways so check on that.

Before you concieve, I recommend purchasing 529 plan which is an interest baring college savings fund. Another thing you may want to consider is maternity clothes. "Once upon a child" is a wonderful second hand baby/maternity store. You can access thier site onceuponachild.com to see if one is near you. You also have to consider a crib which you can get 2nd hand, but purchase a new mattress which runs about $100 (babiesrus.com), infant carseat which I recommend new (babiesrus.com), dresser or container for baby clothes, and diapers and wipes. I do not recommend going over board with high ticket items, instead hope you get them at a baby shower. You can begin to purchase clothes (which again I recommend 2nd hand) You will also need at least 2 crib sheets, and a few recieving blankets. You need a couple of bibs and burp cloths (cloth diapers work wonderfully for this and tend to be a lot cheaper.) You need a couple of wash cloths for babies, at least 2 towels for bathing. Unless it is stuff given to me as gifts, I try not to purchase a lot of things such as clothes, swings, bouncy seats new for they are very expensive and only last a couple of months. Fifty dollars a week is not going to get you very far. Oh, and if you have room for storage, I recommend picking up at least a jar or two of baby food when ever going shopping, for food runs about 50 cents a jar and when the baby is eating 3 jars a day that adds up quickly. If planning on bottle feeding, you will need bottles ($3 piece) and formula (but be cautious of pre-purchasing a lot of formula incase that baby has allergic reactions and cant use it. If breast feeding; breast pump (starting around $30 at walmart) and freezer bags for breast milk, nursing bras ($10-15) a piece and nursing pads. Instead of a crib, my aunt purphased a playpen with a bassinet attachment for her last baby. It over all cost her about $100. You may also want to consider either a stroller ($50-100) or a baby carrier (such as snugli or baby bjorn) Most items you need you can find at: (please note the babies-r-us has EVERYTHING you need, but is alot pricer. Oh and for the new mommy you need pads for bleeding and i recommend a set of new cheap cotton underwear.

I have 2 babies - Don't buy too much. When you go to the store you will see all this stuff. You will have to have a car seat, crib, diapers, (car seat - about $50, crib- about 100 or so. diapers are 10-15 per pack-) If the mother breast-feeds then you don't have the expense of formula- Formula is very expensive

it all depends some parents start buying right away others wait until after the baby shower. i think things like dipers are a really good thing to start buying don't over do it because they grow so fast. i started off with 2 bags of newborn,2 bags of size one and so on and it dosen't hurt to pick things up if there on special.

hmm i say go to local thrift stores, and things like good will and salvation army for a crib. you can buy cheap sheets and blankets at walmart or even at the thrift stores!!!

diapers, wipes (changing table isn't a NEED, so dont worry about that), onsies (can buy them in packs of 5 or more! work out wonders), if you buy disposible diapers you can use them as burp clothes and to clean up... cheap!!!, few pairs of pants, depending on when the baby is born, a coat, hats, ect. bottles (can buy them in bulk too), and just lil things like that. most of them you can get at thrift stores, and talk to your local hospital, they will give you a lot of things that you need too!!!
