If this is UK you can't buy them. You are entitled to look at them generally with a hospital witness in the room in case you try to destroy or alter them, but theoretically only at those entries which occured after the Medical Records Act came in. (1988)A doctor can also withold notes where he feels that reading those entries may harm the patient mentally. You can also ask for copies. You will be charged for any administration time used by staff plus copying cost.
All computerised records are covered by the data protection act and you are allowed to view them within the stipulations of that act.

Call the hospital and ask to speak to the Medical Records Secretary. He/She will be able to help you. All places are very different! You will have to prove ID and many times they will require you to come in person with a written request/release, and they have a form that asks exactly what you want copied...Make sure you understand what you need before you get it done so it wont cost you $$$$$$.. Good Luck!

Your actual medical records are free in the UK (Where i am) as far as i know- you can get them from yur GP or from a hosital (bar the printing cost possiably, but unlkely). If you wanna buy a X-ray, CT scan etc, then it costs. I shattered my collarone last year grassledging, my intial X-ray was £10, with the other at £5 each.
Good Luck!

Your medical records are yours and you do not have to buy them. If you are changing docs they can send them to another. You can ask for a copy of all your records and they should give them to you unless they do a charge for the printing.

As far as I am aware you have a legal right to see any and all of your medical records for FREE, it comes somewhere in the data protection act.

you do not say where you are but in England & Wales you can only have access to notes that are type written not hand written. However, some hospitals get round this by transcribing anything printed out by a department into hand.

I thought you were allowed to request copies of everything held on you by law for free. I know Government Departments have to provide it. I thought hospitals were the same.

It will depend how much information it has. If it's a big fat chart you can filter what you want to make the price less.
They should have a viewing room where you can go view your chart and pick what you want.

It depends on the size of your file. They normally charge by the sheet (A4).
