I've tried dying my hair red- not just with temporary and semi-permanent colors, but with damagaing super-permanent stuff that makes it crispy and unpleasant. Is there any way to treat my hair before dying, or a specific brand that will keep red color in my hair longer? I have dark brown hair and I'm just looking for a little extra red to liven it up.

John Frieda has a nice line of products especially for redheads (dyed or natural). This includes this great color sealant serum that you smooth into your hair to lock in color when you get out of the shower. When I had dyed my hair red, I found that it helped keep my color in longer.

red is the color that fades the most and the fastest to do so.
using a shampoo for chemically treated hair may help.If you use a semi permanent color, try washing it with two soppings the
night before you color your hair

it's pretty hard to do because the 'cells' that make up the red dye are larger than other color dyes, so it is washed off easier.
