First, they haven't merged. There is a fairly tricky regulatory gauntlet that this "proposed" merger is going to have to successfully run before they are given the green light.

From anti-trust concerns to FCC objections, I'd say there's a 50/50 shot that this ends up happening at all.

That said, according to Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin on Howard Stern's show this morning, you would not need to upgrade your equipment to get combined programming. Sounds like they can do something to combine the feeds behind the scene from the supply-side.

This jives with an article written today by a Philadelphia Daily News writer which states that you will not need to buy new equipment (with a caveat that you may need to buy a new "brain" for your receiver). The article (linked below) is also a pretty good primer on the proposed merger.

Mel also said this morning that if the deal is not approved, that will end these merger efforts - i.e. no lawsuits, and no appeals.

My opinion... Don't hold your breath. Sadly, what's great for consumers is usually blocked by federal regulators. The "new radio" question will probably be moot in a few weeks.

Probably... they havn't said yet what the results will be. Unfortunately I have a suspicion that prices will go up... which sucks because I don't even want XM radio. I'm completely happy with Sirius.

possibly... they havn't mentioned yet what the outcomes would be. regrettably I easily have a suspicion that fees will pass up... which sucks because of the fact i do no longer even opt for XM radio. i'm thoroughly pleased with Sirius.

No on the radio but you will get more stations but probably not until next year, from what I hear.
