I'm sorry but Rocky Marciano is highly overrated. Usually when a fighter is undefeated it means he didn't fight anybody noteworthy. Yes Marciano fought Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott ,but they were over 40 and clearly over the hill at the time. His other name opponents Archie Moore, and Ezzard Charles were over 40 years old and they were blown up light heavyweights. Marciano wouldn't have lasted three rounds with either Foreman, Liston or Tyson.
1) Muhammad Ali- The most versatile heavyweight ever, he could alter his style and tactics for his opponent like very few fighters in any weight class. Remember nobody could figure out how to beat either Sonny Liston or George Foreman until he showed the world how to do it.
2) Jack Johnson- was simply untouchable in his day and there are still people who think he threw the fight against Jess Willard
3) Joe Louis- a man who should be given every bit as much credit for opening up opportunities for African American athletes as Jackie robinson. Simply a class act.
4) Larry Holmes - a solid fighter who was techinically sound, didn't make mistakes and took advantage of his opponent's mistakes very well.
5) Jim Jeffries - the prototype for powerful "unbeatable" fighters like Liston, Foreman and Tyson, he was the first Heavyweight Champion to retire unbeaten.
6) Evander Holyfield The second light heavyweight to win the heavyweight title and probably the gutsiest fighter ever.
7) Gene Tunney - the man who figured out how to beat Jack Dempsey, his legacy is unfairly tarnished by the so-called "long count" which was actually a Jack Dempsey blunder that Tunney, smart as he was, took advantage of. As sound a technical fighter as there ever was
8) Michael Spinks - the first light heavyweight champion to win the heavyweight title, and the one who denied Larry Holmes the opportunity to match Marciano
9)Jack Dempsey - was one of the most popular athletes in an era when there were a lot of them. had a lot of guts and determination
10) George Foreman - ranks ahead of the two tied for 11th because he came back to win the title again after 20 years in a marvelous display of perserverance against Michael Moorer
11) (2 way tie) Sonny Liston, Mike Tyson see Jim Jeffries
