Hi. First off, I hope you have fun on your trip!
Second, it is purely up to you as to what you want to do. I used to be a hotel manager and here is how things work as far as people who come in with no reservation:
If the hotel is not full (less that 40%) we would give anyone who walked off the street a low rate to boost occupancy.
If the hotel was half full (between 40-65%) We would give them a standard rate, the one that they would most likely have gotten with a travel agency, or had they booked online.
If the hotel was full (between 65-99%) we would give them full price - no discounts.
If hotels aren't full, you can find REALLY great deals by just walking in. But it's a chance you have to take. You need to ask yourself if you are basically willing to gamble with the price of your room, or if you want a fixed rate with no worries.
Whatever you choose, I hope that you have a wonderful stay in TN. Take care!

I work in the hotel business, you should defiantly book on-line before you go. This way the rates will be cheaper and you can get into the area you want. Sometimes if you book when you arrive most of the hotels will be sold out and you will have to commute to an area that's not in the best of shape. Depending on where you go in TN (such as Nashville, Memphis) make sure you have a reservation.
Hopefully this helps!

Book now, that way no surprises when you arrive. Whatever you do, I wouldn't suggest using a travel website (travelocity, etc) but booking directly through the hotel. It usually is the same price, if not cheaper to book direct. Plus, the cancellation policy and fees are ridiculous through the travel websites!!!

IF you know when and where, online by all means, I do this often and if you have exact, I'd check hotwire.com first. They won't tell you the hotel at first (because of booking), but they do have some good deals (as seen on T.V.) Another good one is hotels.com, they'll let you see prior to a commitment and they have good deals also. Whatever you decide, online is almost always at least 20% cheaper. Good luck

Book early that way you know you will have a room. Then do whatever is cheapest, check the well known web sites and even call the hotel and see who has the best deal.
