Get him a nice present and help him get a job somewhere where he will not be in contact with you. You should have kept in touch with him.
Also, from what you disclose I believe you need to consider exactly what happened during the incident. In Fred's mind you bear some of the responsibility for what happened. However, you are being silent as to your exact role. Either you were somehow an enabler or simply a passive bystander. However, it does not appear that you actively tried to prevent Fred from flipping out, at least from your description. And, this is what Fred may believe. So think of the truth from Fred's and your perspective, and try to discuss this with him in a calm and respectful manner.
I know this is perhaps reading too much into the situation, but somehow you need to acknowledge your role and act accordingly.
On the other hand if you have proof that Fred is threatening you, then you can take action with the police. But you need proof and probable cause. Also, you should consider disclosing your concerns to your employer.
Finally, you should consider self-defense training. If you plan to keep a weapon make sure you take some serious training in using the weapon and conflict resolution. Otherwise, you may just provoke the person and cause more violence.

I worked in corrections for twenty years and I can't even recall all the times I had guys tell me they were going to kill me, my family, my pets, and burn down my house. Never happened but... I've always felt that the best defense is a good offense. Never let your guard down, be ready, and prepare. Most scumbags can't develop a sound plan of attack because they only think in short terms. You need to take some time and assess your weaknesses and harden those points first. Get a gun and learn how to use it properly. Practice, practice, practice! A 12ga. shotgun with a pistol grip and sling is a great home defense weapon. Buy 00-shot ammo and load it full up. Practice moving around the inside of your home with it. Get used to reloading in the dark. Develop a family emergency plan. Make sure your wife and kids know where to go immediately if anyone tries to invade your home. Make arrangements for safe haven at a neighbor's home for them. Lastly, do not hesitate to blow the individual out of his sock if he enters your home without permission. You must not hesitate if the situation threatens your survival or the survival of your family.

You need to get a restraining order and a heavy duty pistol. Get a concealed carry permit and take classes at the gun range. If he goes against the restraining order, defend your life. Most people would just say call the cops but there are thousands of people who are dead who that didn't work for.

Have you called the police. If they can't or won't do anything you are toast. After he's through with you he will probably go to jail for a longer sentence this time. Head for the tall grass.

If you saved any proof of those things, you can get a restraint order against him. At least file for one, even if your refused. It'll be on record. It's a little late for self defense courses. But you can, by and register a gun.

If he threatened you call the police and make a report on it, so that if you have to do him bodily harm in self defense, you will also have the police report as supporting evidence.

Yep, call police. Threatening language like that should have earned him additional jail time.
