Also I was told they have a headquarters in Manhattan by Lincoln Sq but that non Mormons weren't allowed inside. Why is that?

I am LDS (Mormon) so I can help you out. "Also I was told they have a headquarters in Manhattan by Lincoln Sq." This is a temple. They don't even let every Mormon in. Temples are sacred placed. They are the house of the Lord and the building needs to be respected. You have to be worth to enter a temple. I have to get a temple recommend from my bishop (by going in an interview and he makes sure I am living my life worthily). Nothing evil goes on in a temple. A lot of LDS people get married in the temple. There are over 100 of them over the world. You can however go to any LDS church that you want to.
Why you see a lot more Mormons in New York is because Mormons do missionary work. Missionaries devote 2 years of their lives to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. We teach people what we believe and they become members of the church (through baptism) if they accept the gospel and desire to live by it. We have a lot of missionaries, so a lot of people are being converted. The LDS church is growing very fast. If you want to know more about this church, do not ask the people on yahoo. The people on yahoo are incredibly bias and tell lies as if they were facts. One of the only safe places to look is at www.lds.org (this is the official website). You can also ask someone who is Mormon, especially a missionary. Some people don't know a lot on our church and get us confused with the Amish. Honestly, my answer is about the only credible one (because I belong to the church) Anyway, most Mormons are very nice people, so don't be afraid of them.

Just to add to your first two answers - which were both great btw.

The church building in New York is unique in that it's a normal chapel on the first floor, and then a temple on the higher floors. So, anyone can go in the chapel, first floor area, just not the higher temple floors. (the church did the same thing in Hong Kong because land is so hard to get in those cities).

Also, when new temples are built, anyone can go through them in public tours - just not after they've been dedicated.
