When I go out drinking sometimes the next morning and the odd occasion a couple of days after I have a yellow tinge to my face. Can anyone help?

Yellowness of the skin and whites of the eyes is due to an excess of bilirubin in the blood and is called jaundice. Bilirubin is formed during the natural breakdown of red blood cells and is normally 'conjugated' (joined onto a protein) in the liver. Conjugated bilirubin is passed down the bile tubes into the intestine (and is part of the reason that feaces are coloured brown). Some gets reabsorbed by the intestine and excreted in the urine, hence the yellowness of urine!

Bilirubin can build up in the blood if there is a failure of conjugation by the liver, or if the bile tubes get blocked. The cause of jaundice is due therefore to liver problems or problems with the gall-bladder and bile ducts. If a person has been out drinking, the liver has to work 'overtime' because alcohol is metabolised by this organ, and on occasions the role of the liver in conjugating bilirubin gets overwhelmed.

I do think that you ought to get yourself seen by a doctor, so that you can have some blood tests, possibly an ultrasound scan or even a liver biopsy. The fact that you do not mention other symptoms is reassuring, because usually if a person gets jaundiced due to severe liver problems, there are other symptoms such as the development of excess fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites), the development of multiple little red capillary malformations on the skin (spider naevi), fluid retention around the ankles etc etc. If you had a gall stone for example blocking the bile duct, you would probably have had significant pain and also noticed much paler (and more floating) faeces than normal.

A common cause of jaundice in an otherwise fit healthy young person is something called Gilbert's Syndrome, which is a hereditary mild deficiency of bilirubin conjugation. Gilbert's Syndrome is not progressive or dangerous, however it's probably best if you enjoy alcohol in moderation (rather than in large amounts).

Nevertheless, do go and get medical advice. I hope that this gives some explaination as to how people can become jaundiced. Hope all goes well!

Oh dear, I wonder how much drinking that means. Yellow colouration suggests jaundice. If it occurs after a drink binge it might suggest that your liver is already compromised and is now becoming more sensitive to alcohol. Go see your GP. Give him a truthful account of your alcohol consumption. I am sure he will want to take blood to look at your liver enzymes. Take it from there, I suspect you should stop drinking altogether.

Did u know if u eat ony carrotts r skin turns a orangey look? What
is what anorexia's do. So whatever you are drinking that night
is obviously being absorbed by your skin, leading me to believe that this type of drink/or something in it you're drinking too much of or allergic to. Perhaps banana's something in the drink? Go for an allergy test, they'll know. And for God's sake don't drink it anymore, if your allergic to it, it maybe doing damage to your vital
ORGAN'S! Find out what's in that drink and get yourself tested for it Please!
Best o Luck, Summer

I would say stop drinking immediately and go to your doctor - your liver seems to be under some strain and may have a problem as you seem to be becoming jaundiced.

liver problems. but i never heard of anyone having liver problems with occasional drinking. either you are a serious drinker with serious health issues or your liver is not in healthy shape for some other reason and drinking makes your problem worse. either way, stop drinking, if you can, and get yourself checked out.

Your body is not able to eliminate the alcohol you are consuming. Your kidneys and liver are failing. You need to give up the alcohol and get to a doctor as soon as possible.
