I have been struggling with this problem for over 16 years. I have tried tons of diffrent meds. I can tell you for sure that everyone is different. Just because one med helps Tom, that doesn't mean it will also help Jane.
For me, Xanax has been my miracle drug. It really helps. It will stop a panic or anxiety attack in its tracks. I know lots more people who have had good luck with Xanax than with any other drugs they have tried. Maybe you could ask your doc about letting you try a very small dosage of it.
Good Luck.

P.S. I was on zoloft for over 5 years. It never really helped that much, and the withdrawals were horrible when I weaned off it. Effexor is not for me either.

What one person takes to relieve anxiety attacks may not work for you. Your primary care physician can prescribe those types of medications and it may take a few tries until you find one that works for you without a lot of side effects. Your physician may suggest that you see a pshycologist to help you understand why you are having these attacks and help you to change your lifestyle to minimize these attacks. They do get better over time.
I had problems with anxiety attacks years ago and Valium worked well for me. I had problems with side effects with many of the other medicatons so used just a basic benzodiazepine. I very rarely need any medication now.

Check out the website below for a list of different medications that can be used and how they may effect you.

There is really no "right" medicine in general. You have to see which is right for you, as people react differently. I was on Paxil and it made me feel bad. I'm on Effexor xr now and it has worked but now I want off of it because it is making me feel bad. Your doctor usually decides on what to prescribe you based on your symptoms and what drug he's seen the best results from.
Whatever he prescribes, I would suggest having Xanax too to take when you get a really bad episode. Good luck, you can overcome it. I did :)

Paxil is good for this. Any MD -can- but some want you to see a shrink first.
