We've hired four wheel drives before in Kendal and Ambleside and I'm sure there will be places in Windermere you can hire from as well.

One thing you need to check is that they'll let you take the vehicle off the roads. You should be OK on green lanes as they're public roads but when we've hired them it's been to work on properties that are miles off any kind of public road and some places don't allow that.

Because of the increase in green laning and the damage caused by irresponsible drivers there's been a clampdown and quite a lot of green lanes are now closed to motor vehicles. It would be wise to consult the definitive maps held by the local council before setting out or to get advice from an off-road club.

The Green Lane Association website has a huge amount of information on it... http://www.glass-uk.org/

There are many places where you can book a days off-roading such as the link in the above answer. This is a good idea if you've not driven a 4WD before. In normal conditions they're fine but in more serious conditions you need to know what you're doing in order to avoid rolling the vehicle, losing control or getting stuck.
