Hi. . . I work full-time, and go to school part-time. I want to claim the max for school deductions, but I have a child that is not mine that I can claim as well. How can I get the maximum back without getting audited? Is it safe to claim both school and a child? or should I just go with one or the other? If anyone has experience with this please let me know. Thanks.

A flag may be raised in you claiming a child that is not yours, do you meet all of the IRS rules to claim the child? If the parents or parent of the child is claiming them or they are the one who is qualified to claim the child, you might not be entitled to claim the child
Call the IRS to get determination on whether you meet the qualifications

You can claim both with no problems. Not getting audited is never a guarantee, as the IRS audits a percentage of returns randomly, as a matter of course. Education Credit should be available for you, but if you are a first year post highschool student, think long term and go with the HOPE credit no matter what the Lifetime earning credit may get you. Yuo only have two years to use the HOPE and the rest of your life for the Lifetime. If you qualify by virtue of income level, you may also get the Earned Income Credit with a qualifying child.
