I'm a dog lover, and love dogs of all kinds, but I've always owned large breeds. I'm moving to a new city and starting a new job now that I'm about to graduate from grad school, and I'm researching what breed will be best suited to my new lifestyle. I'll never work more than 8 hours in a day, with time to come home on my lunch break, but the 8 hours could be early or late, no set schedule. I think a small dog will do best, as I can train it to use a litter box/puppy pads in the house and not worry about making it home in time for potty breaks. The dog will still get daily walks (30 min. to an hour), plenty of play time, and daily grooming. I've been researching breeds, and I'm most interested in a min. poodle, bichon frise, maltese, or tibetan spaniel. What are your experiences with these breeds, and do you have any suggestions? Please don't suggest other breeds, just help me decide between these four!

Bichon is the best out of those four. They are sweet but can have bad dental problems with age. Clean regularly. Need lots of brushing.

I was never a dog person before my chihuahua adopted me. I live in a small apartment and he has adapted very well. It did take longer than I anticipated to potty train him, but now.... He brings me the leash, puts it down in front of me, does this cute little stretch thing, then in a low quiet voice says "let me out". He can also say "I want one" and "I love you". Everyone who witnesses him is amazed. It just took lots of time and wieners! But the love and companship I get from Boo is priceless.
