Although there are a number of things that go into losing weight, at the most basic level, it is a question of caloric expenditure vs. caloric intake. Regardless of what form your expend your calories (whether it be by exercising, breathing, etc.), in order to lose weight, that amount must be greater than the amount of calories you take in (whether it be by food or drink).

Weight loss can occur in a number of ways, but most commonly it will occur in the form of either fat or muscle, or both. One pound of fat is equivalent to 3500 calories. In other words, in order to lose one pound of fat in a week, you need to take in (on average) 500 calories fewer than you expend over the course of a week. This can come either by eating less, exercising more, or both.

Most health experts agree that 2lbs. per week is a reasonable weight loss goal. Anything more than this and you risk losing muscle as well (which is counterproductive because muscle burns more calories at a resting rate than fat does. Integrate some form of resistance training into your exercise routine in order to prevent muscle loss).

Regarding your question, yes, 30 minutes per day three days a week is enough to lose weight as long as you are making the cuts in your diet as well. I would suggest checking out this website:

http://www.hussmanfitness.org/bmrcalc.htm

On it you will find a BMR (basil metabolic rate) calculator. Your BMR is an estimate of the minimum amount of calories your body needs to sustain itself on a daily basis (i.e. what your body will burn by itself without you doing anything). You can use this as a base to determine what you should be taking in in calories. For instance, if your BMR is 1750 calories, you could lose 1 pound per week by only taking in 1500 calories per day and doing 250 calories per day of exercise.

Also, remember that it is not just the amount of time you spend exercising in a gym that can help you lose weight. Everything from taking the stairs to chewing a piece of gum will increase the amount of calories you expend over your BMR. With that said, the extraordinary health (both physical and mental) benefits of making exercise a part of your weekly routine will make it worth it for years to come.

Finally, one last note. I saw that you mentioned that you wanted to lose 20lbs. Dedication is key here. The foundation for weight loss should be a health diet full of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Don't fall for a gimmick diet (e.g. no carbs). These types of diets simply lead to starving your body which inevitably lead to you falling off the wagon. Once you get used to eating healthy, you won't have to worry about being a yo-yo dieter. Also, if you slip up or have a set back, don't get discouraged and give up. Remember, living healthy is a lifestyle...not something that you do for the bikini season. If you remember to take the long-term approach then you won't have to worry about asking this question again next year. Good luck.

It takes at least 3 days to drop any amount of weight all at once. Don't worry about the last two days since they probably haven't caught up, gym rewards start about a week after you start going. Don't have just salad, have a little carb before the aerobics. Your body takes 20 minutes to burn fat so 20 minutes after you start you get energy from fat. If you have no available energy the first 20 minutes you'll get really tired and have to take a break. P.S. your picture looks pretty skinny

That's the recommended starting point. Congratulations... how long have you been keeping this up, and how do you feel?

If you have the habit down now, you can start to rev up the intensity, or try for longer workouts, or more frequent workouts. Remember, this is only half the equation... you still need to eat a well-balanced, calorie restricted diet.

Good luck!

if you want to lose weight you really should workout 60-90 a day. 30 a day is really for cardio health. plus, you should be on some sort of calorie reduction diet.

That is pretty much bare minimum. You really should increase that to 45-60 min. You could lose weight, remember, what you eat is just as important as what you do.

Yes, it helps. Nourish your body thin, instead of starving your body fat. Good carbs like celery and carrots will never make you fat. Bad carbs like cake will, but you don't need to know the whole science of glycemic load. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin and healthy. Salt has no calories but makes you fat and burning more calories does not help this fatness.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!

It depends on what you eat. If you are eating around 2000 calories a day, and exercise, you will not be losing much weight.
