All puppies do this. Give him smaller serving more often. If you give him 1/2 cup divide that into three and give him a little bit every 15 minutes and not all at once.

This puppy could go into shock from not eating. Puppies need to eat every couple hours, small amounts. He cannot maintain his body temperature and needs to be kept warm. If he has a runny nose and is sneezing this could be some type of infection. I'm sure if you got him at 5 weeks he has had no vet care so far. This is very serious and he needs to see a vet tonight, right now! The vet can check him out and tell you what to feed him and all the other things he needs. If your vet cant get him in, take him to another one. Go to the vets office and wait they will work you in. I promise they will not send you away with a puppy that young.

since you are still asking questions.. i am guessing things have gone well so far! congratulations. i do apologize on one of your earlier questions, you asked the eight for 2 weeks and i told you for 2 months.. i am sorry.
feed him smaller portions throughout the day instead of 4 to 5 times maybe 6 to 8. mine does the same. he is 5 weeks also tomorrow. a mantle dane. i also backed off on the canned food because he gobbles that. he eats slower with the dry small bites. i feed nutro lamb and rice. he is doing good! hope yours works out!

1. Put something large in his bowl.
2. Hand feed him.
3. Spread his food out on a baking sheet instead of lumping it altogether in a bowl.
4. Feed him several small meals vs. 1 or 2 large meals.

Only put a few bites in his bowl at a time and wait a minute for him to digest before giving him more. There really is no other way to convince a dog to eat slowly, it's a basic survival instinct to eat as quickly as possible because when they were in the wild they had to fight for their share of food before the other dogs got to it.

Try putting rocks in his food that he has to work around to get the food. This will force him to slow down while he works around the rocks. Just make very certain the rocks are too big for him to swallow.
This has worked well for me with a German Shepherd.

rocks work for horses but I have seen puppies choke on them I just think it is something he will grow out of... if you have other dogs that might mean he is eating it so fast because he doesnt want them to get it... if that is the case you just need to feed him in a closed room...

Try putting a tennis ball in with his food then he has to work around it.
