Whenever a question is posed about women wearing a hijab or other covering, Muslim women invariably state that they feel free because men don’t look at them and they are not being judged on their looks. For me this raises some questions about Muslim women’s perspective about western women, how they dress and western men.
•How do you think the “real” western women dresses from day to day?
•Do you find real western women to be fundamentally immodest in their dress?
•Do you feel we dress solely to entice men? If so, do you feel this is a choice or that it is something we are forced to do? If forced, who is forcing us?
•If a man finds a woman attractive and looks at her, is this wrong? If it is wrong, who exactly is in the wrong, the man or the woman?
•If a man says something rude to a woman, who is in the wrong, the man or the woman?
Thank you for all your answers, I look forward to reading them and getting your perspective on our culture.

•there are different dresscodes in different parts of the world. every culture has it's own dress codes, even nuns have something like a veil and comver their body completely. also we had westerners and europians wearing something like hijabs for a few decades age and there still is in some rural places(mostly europe).
•No, but they mostly don't look at the side effects, like they might arouse a sick minded fool.
•mostly those women who dress sexy want to impress on men. for moderate Muslims it's good to entice your husband but not someone whom you don't know.
•Yeah, it's wrong if a man looks at a woman with a sexual attitude. it's the mainly man's problem and if the girl dress inappropriate it's partly the womans fault too.
•the man is doing wrong if he's telling something rude to a woman.

Well, I was born and raised in America so I grew up within a western culture.
I know that not all American women dress like a slut. Many women are modest well probably more than the women who dress in skimpy clothes.
As an American we usually dress in a immodest way when we are going to parties basically where we know guys might be to ogle at us
No, not all American women dress solely to entice men. It is a choice that is influenced heavily by our culture though.
Before I became a Muslim, I had no problem with a man looking at me in skimpy clothes. In fact I loved it. Now, I feel that my body is my temple and the only person who should see my whole beauty is my husband. No, it's not wrong that a man would find a woman attractive esp when she is covered up. However, if she is dressed like a slut then chances are the man only wants to have sex with her.
When a man says something rude to a woman and she is dressed in a skimpy outfit then it's both their fault. I have been sexually harassed due to the outfits I used to wear. It's the women's responsibility to protect herself. Granted it doesn't guarantee 100% that she won't be raped. However, I think in our society it will help.

1. Most that I see dress modestly, as measured by their culture. I spend most of my days around professionals and christian women.
2. No, but a lot of things are socially acceptable which are really not very flattering to a woman and make her appear as a sex object, for example those very low pants, or very tight blouses. Sure women have a right to wear them, but why would they want to? I just don't understand it.
3. No, but many women are slaves to fashion, especially among younger women.
4. If a man looks at a woman who is not his wife and finds her attractive, he should find out if she is compatible with him and perhaps someday marry her (assuming both are unmarried). If a man looks at a woman who is not his wife with lust, that is wrong, according to both the Quran and the Bible. The man is wrong, of course.
5. Rudeness for no reason is never excusable. If a man says some unprovoked rude thing, he is at fault, of course.

Just like the stereotype of a muslim woman covered from head to toe, there is a stereotype of western women in muslim countries that they dress very revealingly. But living in the US, I know this is not true. Although they dress differently compared to muslims, I dont know many who dress imodestly at least by the standards of the US. So no, I dont think they are immodest in their dress generally. And no, I dont believe western women dress only to entice men.
If a man looks at a woman, it is the man's fault also. In islam, if a woman walks by he has to lower his eyes. Unforuntately most people ignore this part. Not all men do this. So....women are advised to cover themselves. But this is not a way to degrade them. Men are also supposed to cover themselves because women also stare sometimes. Men and women are different physically but men who walk around wearing shorts and asking their wifes to wear hijab are being hypocrites. So the responsibilty goes both ways. If a man was walking around naked he couldn't blame people for noticing. I dont want to offend anyone but I do not think it is wrong for the woman to cover herself to prevent this. In some countries you cannot walk down a street with men staring at you. This might not bother everyone but if I speak for myself, it makes me uncomfortable. Some people blame the women when she gets raped for dressing imodestly and those people are complete hypocrites. I cannot express how much I disagree with this. Its just the way of men to free themselves from blame. Its not wrong for a man to find a woman attrative or the woman to find a man attractive but staring at one with unislamic thoughts is wrong in islam. Its not wrong for either to look attractive. Islam does not tell you to dress like a homeless person. If a man says something rude to a woman, the man is in the wrong. A woman is not blamed for anything the man does, the hijab is just a way to avoid this, like a shield. sorry for the long answer

I feel liberated when I wear the hijab. I don't judge a man if he wears a ball cap. I don't judge people on how they dress, my Christian friends like to wear tight fitting or revealing clothing. For me its a personal choice to protect my modesty and reveal nothing. No man has ever told me to wear hijab, I know some females that wear and others that choose not to wear it.

aslamo alekom,
first i would like to thank you for your open minded questions whcih i really admire.
•How do you think the “real” western women dresses from day to day?
-it varies according to her still in clothes,
some girls are conservative in the way they dress some are not even in the western cummunites.
•Do you find real western women to be fundamentally immodest in their dress?
-well as i said earlier not all of them are like that.
•Do you feel we dress solely to entice men? If so, do you feel this is a choice or that it is something we are forced to do? If forced, who is forcing us?
-im sure as you sure know that some women wear such clothes to entric men but certainly not all of them do so,
some girls like to look attractive and appealing,
others just liek to look beutefull not for the sake of men but for the sake of ehr own self,
its not about forces i think its about motives and each woman has her won motive.
•If a man finds a woman attractive and looks at her, is this wrong? If it is wrong, who exactly is in the wrong, the man or the woman?
-both are wrong!
man is wrong bcz he shouldnt look at a woman in an erotic way whom she is not his wife, this is to safe the cummuntiy from the evils of looking at other women whi is not his wife and wht can proceed this from away of marrge realions which will bring insecurity and unhappness to both side, the concept of family is really overemphasized in islam bcz it really brings inner peace to both sides man and his wife when the woman is sure that he doesnt look to anyother woman then herself,so that he wouldnt compare her to others so that they both feel secure.
-as to for the woman she is wrong bcz when she exposes herself to other man then her huspand this will make other men get attrcted to her and try to hit on her, which im sure her huspand wouldnt like if he had enough honor and dignity, also in case a man and his wife were away from eachother and other man tried to get close 2 her maybe she would feel weak and maybe something both will regret.
i want to emphasis that these are just theories, not all women who dont wear hejab are unloyal to there huspands, not all men who meets a woman wearing exposed clothes in the streets will get hot for her, what i am saying is that islam came to make the cummunity happier and more stable which is an order from allah our creator to reach inner peace and happiness.
You look at me and call me oppressed,
Simply because of the way I'm dressed,
You know me not for what's inside,
You judge the clothing I wear with pride,
My body's not for your eyes to hold,
You must speak to my mind, not my feminine mold,
I'm an individual, I'm no mans slave,
It's Allah's pleasure that I only crave,
I have a voice so I will be heard,
For in my heart I carry His word,
"O ye women, wrap close your cloak,
So you won't be bothered by ignorant folk",
Man doesn't tell me to dress this way,
It's a Law from God that I obey,
Oppressed is something I'm truly NOT,
For liberation is what I've got,
It was given to me many years ago,
With the right to prosper, the right to grow,
I can climb mountains or cross the seas,
Expand my mind in all degrees,
For God Himself gave us LIB-ER-TY,
When He sent Islam,
To You and Me!
if you have any further questions you are much wellcomed.

Why do we even allow people to wear those bee keeper suits when they drive in our country?
That always pisses me off. The rest of us need to be ID'd, but those wearing bee keeper outfits are allowed to hide? What are you hiding?
Sorry, it's the United States. Put on some clothes.
