Don't get me wrong, it definitely takes skill....but so does Chess, in which you have to outwit your opponent. So IMO Chess is more of a sport than Golf

led, its people like you who make this a bad outlet. I simply questioned why it's considered a sport. I did not downgrade the skill that it takes to perform in a golf competition. But thanks for you informative reply.

Have you ever tried to hit a 1.5" inch round object with a 3' stick, and made it go in the right spot so it can fall into a 4" hole in the least amount of hits? I used to think that way until I actually tried it.

The strategy in the game is much more evident and at the forefront than in some other sports, but it is a sport nonetheless. You have to swing at the right angle and speed, using your body and stance just right.

Golf is in the same category as bowling, archery, and auto racing. You do not necessaily use various muscles all over your body to compete, but they still require skills such as agility, endurance, flexibility, and strength to be good at it.

No, its like calling bowling a sport. If by athleticism, you mean head-to-head play, you are correct. But if you think hitting a ball into a hole is not a physical task, you obviously haven't played golf. There are a lot of sports, such as the 50 yard dash, where your opponents don't get to influence your performance.

People decide what is a sport and what is a game based on several factors. The strictest would only call something a sport if you are able to defend against an opponent, or have a direct effect on their play. Most would say anything that is something you do with your body that is scored objectively would count, but wouldn't include some sports that where the winner is decided by a judge, like diving or gymnastics. Others allow these subjective games, if they are physical enough and have a clearly defined scoring system. It's all a matter of where you draw the line.

I beg to differ. There may not be a lot of athleticism, but it still takes great coordination to hit a golf ball under all the circumstances presented in a golf game. That, and the professionals walk several miles during the course of a game (no carts).

The other reason it is a sport contest: the outcome depends solely on the skill of the competitors.

sport is an activity or game, that requires, skill, strategy, competition, and physical or athletic ability. sure chess is all of that, except for athletic ability. it doesn't take much to life a piece and move it. thats really what seperates a game from a sport. the athleticism. have you ever tried golfing? its take A LOT of athleticism.

sport
–noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

I bet most of the pros on the PGA tour could out bench press you and beat you at arm wrestling. If you think it takes no athleticism to hit a ball 350 yards, go try it.
If there's no athleticism why aren't you on the PGA tour making millions?
Surely you're not going to hit the ball with your mental prowess!

Now fishing and Nascar.... how are they considered a sport?

Golf is one of the most difficult sports on earth. I know, I have played most of them on a competitive level....even to varsity level in college. It requires more concentration than any of them, requires considerable coordination and balance, considerable strength in the abdomen, legs and shoulders. It is played on a competitive level all over the world and, in it's present form, is at least 600 years old. What other definition could you give it? Admittedly, it tends to depart from this to a degree if the player is riding in an electric cart.

Golf is defiantly a sport. Tiger Woods works out probably just as much as any other professional athlete, he benches over 300 pounds. You have to be very flexible and the game is all mental.

why is american football a sport? why is cricket a sport? why is darts a sport? the answer is because they all require a great deal of profesionalism, technique, and to a certain degree in every sports physical prowess (in darts that is usually who can drink the most beer) they also all require practise to get good at. golf whilst not being as physical as some other sports is one of the most technically difficult sports in the world, you don't see anyone get good at golf without years of practise and focus. there is also a great deal of athletisism involved, a golf swing is one of the most dynamic movements the human body can make and is physically more demanding than say shooting in basketball, also did you know it takes more energy to drive a golf ball than it does to start the average car ? years ago golf may not have required you to be athletic but today look at tiger woods he is one of the fittest strongest people around even the ones who look like they may be carrying a bit of extra baggage, such as phil mickleson, are probably fitter and stronger than most people around, inluding you i wager.

now i suggest you shut up and keep your half formed thoughts and opinions to yourself in future.

It takes no athleticism to drive a ball 300 yards?? I believe it does. Its more of a mental sport than physical. But, there is a ton of technique involved.
