My grandma is in the severe stage of Alzheimer's disease and I am just looking for more information on it

Alzheimer's is mostly hereditary. It is caused by the over growth of protein tangles in the brain. It starts with cloudy memory and leads to eventual total memory loss and complete dependency within 5-20 years. They have come up with methods to preventing or delaying Alzheimer's such as taking aspirin or antihistamines for two to three years before symptoms occur (around age 60 or so), but this is still being developed. There is currently no cure and no real treatment.

The older you are, the more likely you are to get AD. I believe at age 85 the chances are 50%. Therefore, it will seem like it's a problem in countries where people are mostly healthy (live a long time); in countries where people die young, they simply don't live long enough to get it.
