My cat has never liked being held, and he's been around us since he was a tiny kitten. Some cats just don't like it. Thankfully, my other kitty loves to be held and snuggle.

How long have you had your cat? Has it always been this way?
If when your cat was a tiny kitten - say 8 weeks old - and you had cuddled it constantly, picked it up and carried it around on your shoulder all the time, it would have been conditioned to allow you to pick it up when it is older, no problem. It is all about the touching, handling, socializing, and conditioning the kitten receives that determines the model of it's behaviour as it grows up. Pretty well the same with humans. What your parents model for you, you will ape - basic.
Now, if your cat's behaviour has changed from being able to pick it up at anytime comfortably to now not wanting to be picked up,
that indicates your cat has discomfort from your touch. There is an injury or disease causing pain to the touch. You can investigate if you wish by lying the cat down on your bed and softly palpating it's body until you find the spots where the cat resists your touch. There you can tell where the possible injury or pain center lies thereby knowing where not to touch the cat to avoid hurting it. Then a phone call to the vet is prudent.

Hope this helps.

With a cat, affection means "on my terms". Some cats will not tolerate being picked up. It could be that she or he simply did not receive that kind of attention as a very young kitten and so is not accustomed to it - or is perhaps frightened by it in some way. Its best just to let sleeping lions sleep rather than trying to change their ways. She might mellow out in time, but you won't be able to force it, that's for sure.

So do I, she is otherwise a very affectionate kitty, we got her from the humane society when she was a year and a half old. She was very raggedy and skinny. My guess is that she must have some bad experience when she was picked up because even though she loves contact and being petted and cuddling, she HATES to be picked up, completely changes her personality she gets really paranoid.

so... did you get an abused kitty or does she just plain not like it? some cats dont like to be held.. its a control thing.

Some cats just hate to be picked up. I have several cats and have fostered many more, and one of them -- Simon -- just HATES to be picked up -- he panics and tries to get away. He loves to be petted, he loves to curl up beside me to sleep, he likes to rest his head on my leg, he HATES to be picked up. He's a kind of anxious cat anyway, and I think it frightens him. I got him as a kitten from a pound -- I took him out of the cage and held him and he was fine -- that was the last time he was OK about being held. I guess being held wasn't nearly as scary as being in that cage.

Anyway, it's just your cat's personality.

Some cats just do not like to be held. If you get your cat fixed sometimes that helps. They seem to calm down after that. Also when my cat got the distemper shot that calmed her down alot and was more lovable and would let me hold her more often.

Cats are self sufficient animals, they like to just be left alone unless they want something from you. My cat is 20 years old and all she want s is to be on your lap when your sitting on the couch, but she does not like to be held when your walking around, it is just their preference.

Cats are very independent, Good Luck

is it possible that your cat has a stomach injury? If she does, that could be causing her pain when you pick her up.

Otherwise, some cats are just moody. Our cat HATES her tummy to be rubbed. Our previous cat, loved it!

Cats don't like to be picked up. We love to pick them up and play with them, we want them to be like stuffed animals. Unfortunately, cats have their own wishes, and we must obey.

Allot of cats don't like having their tummys touched, because that is a vulnerable spot. Not all, but the majority. Your cat may just be moody because of that. If your cat is a male, that may be it also, because they tend to be more self-sufficient, and like to be left alone, like one of my cats, Martin.
