havent heard of the olive oil treatment,,,,,, usually for dry socket (meaning it didnt close up and heal up within the first day or two),,,, you need to return to the dentist for an antibiotic,,, as infection can set in, and even get into your blood stream,,,,,,, the antibiotic will help it heal also,,,,,, dont drink carbonated beverages, really hot or cold beverages, use straws or smoke, or have hard foods, until it heals

I just had a wisdom tooth out on the 9th of this month. My doc said that a dry socket will usually happen within the first 4 days after the tooth has been removed. You aren't supposed to drink carbonated beverages in that time period. Also don't use mouth wash cause the alcohol will dry your mouth out and can cause a lot of irritation. DON'T use a straw for at least a week!! They told me that it takes quite a while before that hole closes up. They gave me a little plastic syringe thing with a curved tip on it to put water in to help rinse out the hole when I'm brushing my teeth. I don't know what I'd do without that. I went to subway earlier and had a sandwich. When I got back to work to brush my teeth and use that thing...I had half an olive stuck in there.
OH, another idea to help the healing. Wet a regular tea bag with warm water and put it back there and gently bite on it. It speeds up the healing process and helps take away some of the pain.

What are you doing drinking carbonated beverages?
It usually takes a few weeks for the sockets of an extracted tooth to heal over. Gauze strips saturated with eugenol only help relieve the pain of a "dry socket", but it actually slows healing. Antibiotics are usually called for when there is a dry socket to prevent or treat the infected tooth socket.

A dry socket is a very specific diagnosis. It is something that must be treated by the dentist and it hurts like an SOB. It can take weeks and weeks for a perfectly normal extraction to heal. Food shouldn't get into it past the first few days if everything is normal. Good luck.

The dentist should have told you to stay away from anything carbonated (soda) and to not drink from a straw. What it does is irritates the wet scab on your missing tooth and keeps it from healing faster. Stop drinking anything carbonated, dont drink out of a straw, and no spicy foods. That should help healer your dry socket.
