These phrases are called "idioms." They are not quotations.

Here's the best online dictionary of idioms I could find - http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/

You can look these phrases up there. Just be careful when using that site. When you search for an idiom, it brings up a page that has the definition in the center of the page. The upper part of the page, under the tabs, is filled up with advertisements ("sponsored links") that won't help you at all. Just read the middle of the page, after the sponsored links, after the phrase you searched for appears for the second time.

By the way, it's "live from hand to mouth" (not "leave") and it's "flog a dead horse" (not "the").
