11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep."

Sounds like Jesus is just saying that he is not the "hired hand", that he is the real deal, the real Messiah, and that he loves us and will lay down his life for us.

You know what this means, but I ask you what does John 10:8 mean, or John 3:14-18

John 10:11-13 means that Jesus is the True shepherd, that Moses and all the Prophets along with the kings and judges were no more then workers for the owner of the vineyard.

As in the story of the Owner of the vineyard, the workers wanted the vineyard for themselves, to glorify themselves in the sight of men. but when the devil comes they can not stand, because they know not the true Word of God, by which they might defeat the devil so they run in fear, and abandon the sheep.

The true shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, for he knows the true Word of God, fear not those who can kill the body, for the body is nothing more then a house.

Now tell me.

Jesus doesn't run away when the wolf attacks His children!
Satan is a roaring lion seeking those he can devour. Don't leave the safety of the Shepard!

the thief is satan.... who wishes to steal and destroy the lives of God's children... Jesus is the Good Shepherd who guides and cares for His sheep (us)... a hired hand is one who acts like a shepherd but has nothing personal to lose if a lamb is stolen by the thief... false preachers/priests, false religions would fit into the hired hand position.. they really have nothing to lose if one of their 'sheep' strays into the hands of satan

The hired hand tends the flock for monetary gain.(He does not own the sheep).

The sheppard owns and cares for the sheep and would not abandon them as the hired hand would.

Jesus owns the sheep of "his" pasture(his followers). And further, laid his life down for them.
