I have a female Jack Russell/Shitzu mix, (her name is Buffy) who's almost a year old and anytime someone is walking down the street or we have company come into the house, Buffy jumps all over them and it's very annoying to both them and me. Is there anyway I can train her to stop doing this? She's very slowly learning how to stay, but when there's a new person to be sniffed or someone to pet her, she doesn't listen to a word I say. Got any ideas?

You can do two things: 1. Take it to a school where they have dog training or 2. You can train it yourself. Sometimes they have dog camps during the summer, so you can take it there.

Don't allow anyone to pet her unless four paws are on the floor. Have people just walk by her (or, on the street, you continue walking past people) if she is jumping. You can tell her to sit (if she knows that) if you wish. Once she stops jumping people may approach and pet her. Sometimes squatting to say hello works; for other dogs it will be better for the person to bend over to pet her. Consistency is vital! All it takes is one or two pets to encourage the behavior.
