Probably a mid size dog. They are loyal and great with children, expecially when raised as a puppy with the child. But, keep in mind, puppies are alot of work.

If you were thinking something smaller, the pet store guy I know (I have a 4 year old too) said no hampster or mice or rats...they are too small and some bite. He said Guinea Pigs are usually good for that age because they are tougher and usually don't bite!

A cat- though a kitten is rough, either adopt a full grown one from the pound or be ready for a few hyper months. Anyway a cat is a good pet for kids because instead of walking it or letting it out a few times a day you just dump out it's litter and put some fresh in the box about once a week. Feeding is simple, and if you go out of town (for less than a week) you can just leave extra food and water (or have a neighbor refill) instead of paying for kennel care. Cats love to play and be petted, but are also perfectly ok being ignored (which happens with kids). The best advantage I can see is that if for some reason you must get rid of the pet, more people are willing to take care of a cat because dogs require so much space, care, they are noisy, etc. Hope this helps!

I recently purchased a goldfish for my 4 year old niece. It's in a little tank in her room, decorated but not overcrowded with fake plants, colorful pebbles, and a little castle. Ever since "Finding Nemo" came out, kids have been crazy about fish! The only downside is that she can't pet it or cuddle it, but at her young age, I suppose that doesn't quite matter since she has stuffed animals. They live in an apartment and a fish was the only thing I could get her, and she adores it very much. She also helps out when the tank needs cleaning, which makes it seem more like a pet. They are inexpensive and if taken care of properly (meaning get a tank kit that comes with an air pump and a filter), they last a while. My niece's fish is going onto 5 months now.

At four years old kids want to learn about animals and proper care. If you're willing to take on another child (AKA pet) then I would say go for a dog with good temperament and that is good with children. Now that spring is around the corner you and your daughter could take tons of walks, play fetch, groom, bathe, or whatever. Whatever you choose, don't forget to get the pet spayed or neutered.

Anything Stuffed..... otherwise you should be asking; "what is a good house pet that I can get, to say it is for my 4 year old daughter, but I will be taking care of it." A 4 year old has a short attention span, and what seems like a great idea now will soon be lost the next best, newest thing..... so you should think about what kind of pet you are willling to take care of.

The easiest option is a fish. They are pretty low-maintenance, and they are fascinating to children. I know with my children that I am usually concerned about the safety of dogs/cats/birds. Sometimes more for the animal!! A fish would definitely be a great first pet.

it kind of depends on your daughter. we have a dog and my daughters are 4 and 2 and they help give her food and clean up messes. we also had a cat that they liked too. my 4yr old wants hamsters but i told her not until she can clean out the cage by herself lol. so i would say any pet is good as long as your are prepared to do most the taking care of it.

I think a four year old can't take care of any pet. IT would be more something they can play with and you take care of full time.

if you can wait till your child is a bit older and can help that would be better.

I just got my 5 and 7 year old a puppy and it's basically my puppy but they play with him.

Get her a goldfish. They are low-maintenance and she will enjoy watching it swim in the aquarium. Every other pet could possibly bite or scratch her, so a fish is your safest bet.

A stuffed animal.

Because at 4 she will not be able to take care of a real pet.
