Perhaps the woman with the fart problem should learn to control her body functions. If she's obese, it's probably a common occurance to be looked at or gawked over for just being so over-weight. Obesity is not an un-controllable disease, not a disease at all, though many obese people like to imagine that it is and too many handicapped spaces are now being taken up for obese people rather than the truly handicapped they were intended for. People respond to funny sounds with laughter, it's just human nature. And I don't think it should be expected that people in a public setting should be non-responsive to their surroundings for the sake of someone who's made the choices in life that lead them into a state of being that puts them at risk of public scrutiny. It's not good to make fun of people outright. But if you're in a situation like the one described, I don't think it's particularly offensive. Perhaps the lady should lighten up and laugh with it. That, or do something to help herself not be a target for public farting responses.

Ahem, both of you were rude.

Passing wind, or an air vacuum sound can occur to anyone in a restaurant booth. Morbidly obese or otherwise.

Perhaps you could have pretended to drop a fork and laugh under the table, or look towards a wall and quietly giggle as you bit your knukles if your self control was completely shot as it sounds.

You and hubby should eat at home until you can control yourselves.

Like that woman doesn't have enough to deal with every day of her life without two adult children making fun of her.

What did you expect to hear from this board?

By the way, etiquette is all about making others feel comfortable, it has nothing to do with your own personal likes or dislikes or what you always do.

Jeez, you sound more like a 14 year old boy than a grown woman.

She was embarrassed enough by being large and making the noise. You were rude to laugh out loud at her. If it had been a friend of yours, it might have been a different story.

I didn't know farts made sucking sounds. I thought they were more like an air horn on a semi. . .

Well, I can see why the lady was disturbed, but it's also a bit funny. I mean, had she been in your position, maybe she would have laughed as well. Of course it would have been nice if you could have pretended to laugh at something else, but I can see why you reacted the way you did.

There is no difference between rude children and rude adults. You and your husband should eat at home.
