My Jack Russell Terrier is Terrified of loud construction trucks, they just started doing construction on the road next to my house, it will be going on for 100 days. He shakes constantly and runs around the house knocking things over nonstop! He is 11 years old and seems in good health, but he is driving me nuts and wearing himself out! I am afraid for his health. I dont have any where I can take him. Any good suggestions would be so appreciated. He is climbing on me now, and will be all day. I dont want to just leave him alone. I am not working right now so I dont have to leave him much, but I dont seem to be of much comfort to him. Can you help? He is like a child to me. I love him.

Good answers so far. Can I give him benadryl? what about a small size carrier? Do you think that would help? Thanks everyone.

I agree start with a Benadryl capsule and if that doesn't mellow the poor guy out, you should ask your Vet for a mild sedative. Especially at his age and Jack Russell's are a bit hyper anyway. My dog freaks completely out at thunder and sometimes we have to sedate her. She's a little hyper too, she's a Hybrid and some noises just make her nuts! Good Luck

Depending on how severe his problem is you can either get tranquilizers prescribed by your vet or you can try Bach's Flower Essences, Rescue Remedy. It's an all natural product with none of the side affects of meds. A dog the size of yours would get 2 drops and it takes about 20 minutes to work. I use it for 1 of my dogs who's afraid of thunder and it's enough to take the edge off and calm him, but if a dog's fear is severe, it wouldn't work.

It's available at some drug stores, health food stores and holistic vets.

The best thing is take him to a Vet's. He will give him a mild seditive. If you can not afford one.. go to your local Health food store, Ask for Natures Remedy"Rescue" it's a natural normaly for humans to reduce stress and calm your nerves but it is safe on dogs. Just put a drop or 2 under his tonge. Hope this helps

Benedryl is 'okay'-- but Clomipramine would be a lot better, but you need a vet to give you a Rx. You also should try to go with him to someplace where there are construction noises, and assure him and give him cookies, so he knows he is safe around that stuff.

You might want to have your vet prescribe a mild sedative. If it's only going to be for 100 days, it couldn't hurt. If you pamper him while he is nervous, which is the human thing to do, it's only going to make him be more nervous, especially if you aren't there, but I know you want to calm him. Therefore, your best alternative would be a mild sedative.

Give him a Benadryl when he really starts to freak out. It'll chill him out for a while.

Talk to your vet about prescribing something for him.
