He doesn't like us brushing him, and he only likes dry cat food.

Diet is probably key. I hear what you're saying about him only liking dry food - but you CAN get that monkey off his back and get him eating better food.

I don't know how interested you are, but you can learn about feeding whole prey, feeding raw meat (which is of course supplemented), or just feeding a good quality canned food.

I'm posting in my usual links - read as much as you wish. If you read nothing else, look at the list of good canned foods, and look for info on how to convert a kibble junkie to canned.

It CAN be done - it took me 2 weeks, but it was worth it. Shedding and dandruff are both way down.

Get him the best quality dry food that you can. Nutrition has a lot to do with shedding. Talk to your vet, but Science Diet is probably the way to go.

You have to get the cat on a regular grooming routine. You just have to do a little at a time. Use a fine toothed comb, it will get the undercoat out better. You don't have to spend all this crazy money on these stupid shedding combs that are metal and hurt the cat anyway (besides it's just a clipper guard off of normal hair clippers on a stick anyhow). I have plenty of success with a 10 cent fine toothed plastic comb.

When I got my cats as kittens , I immediately started them on a regular bathing/grooming routine. They love it now. They wait for me in the bath tub when they know I'm getting ready to take my shower. They also sit still for the blow dryer and purr the whole time they are getting combed. They also only get Science Diet wet food, which ensures that they are getting a high nutritional value in the diet, according to the vet.

So, with time and patience you and your cat will do fine. Just start small. I would definitely change the food though if you aren't giving Science Diet or even Iams. Then just try one or two passes with a comb every couple hours. Then the cat will get used to the feeling of it and become more receptive to grooming.

Good luck to you!

You can't ask the impossible. If he won't let you brush him he is going to shed unless you shave him. You don't really have a lot of choices. Cats shed. They have two coats, summer and winter, and when the fur comes out it has to go someplace, so it's going to shed. Just hold the cat and brush him. He'll get over it.

Whether he likes it or not..brushing daily or every other day is best. Is it long haired? If so you will need to do double duty to keep the shedding under control. There is nothing out there that I know of that will cut down or stop the shedding regardless of the claims of some pet mfg. co.

your cat may just have a preference to dry cat food, one of mine does and my other has a preference for tinned cat food so i suppose its just their choice. if you start with a soft brush for a small time each day he may get used to it be able to use a harder brush in the future

Vitamins. The best are the "oils" that you can add to their food. It helps their skin and coat and reduces shedding. If she is shedding that much, I would also recommend something for hairballs. If she hasn't got them yet, she will.

There are anti-shed shampoos you could use, as well as brushes that trap hair. That is what I use on my Schnauzer. Go to your local pet store and they will be glad to help you.
