As a coastie brat I grew up around the boats, the helicopters, and the fine men and women who have served. I think many people forget that the Coast Guard is active 24/7 not just times of war. There are many opportunities and any interest you have can become a career. There are helicopter and plane piolets, there are the rescue divers (they jump out og helicopters into the ocean to make a rescue), there are teh bouy tenders (a class of ship dedicated to maintaining function of the bouys and on call rescue) there are the search and rescue/patrol vessels (they are white and patrol the borders and rescue vessels in trouble as well as some environmental protection) and there are the ice breakers (big red boats with an incredible thick hull designed to plow thru ice to keep waterways clear for other boats. Then you go into flight (not my area of expertise). PLease go talk to a recruiter or find your nearest CG base, I'm sure the CO or XO would like to show you areound and answer your questions.

One nifty thing about the CG, as a female, you will be treated the same as the men.

I am a US Coast Guard Veteran.

The Coast Guard is a sea service and part of the department of Homeland Security. Their job is to police all navigable waterways and US territorial waters. They are also a life-saving service.

Be advised that in times of war they fall under the department of the navy and have been involved in every major conflict the US has engaged in for its' entire history. They are part of the military and you will be required to swear the same oath of allegiance as any other military.

I personally feel it is a great way to serve your country and I enjoyed my time in the guard. I only left active duty because I had two children and did not want to leave them behind to be raised by relatives.

Find a Coast Guard unit close to where you live and visit it or find a recruiting office near you and they can even set up a tour for you to visit a ship or land unit.

Good luck and remember that you have plenty of time as you are only 14. Finish school and make a choice then.

Here's their home page.

They have a service academy, as do the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It's a top-notch school, mostly geared toward Engineering.

Their mission is a little different from the other branches, since it includes ongoing border and rescue missions. While not usually considered a "combat" component, their day-to-day missions are important and real. It isn't hard to find people they've rescued from sudden adverse weather, if you live along the coastline.

I was an Army officer, my brother a CG officer, and many of my friends in the area are Coasties. It's a fine choice of service and career. They are NOT in any way a second-class of military service.
