An officially sanctioned postponement of compulsory military service.
Example: draft deferment for college students.
WASHINGTON, April 30 — It was 1959 when Dick Cheney, then a student at Yale University, turned 18 and became eligible for the draft.
Eventually, like 16 million other young men of that era, Mr. Cheney sought deferments. By the time he turned 26 in January 1967 and was no longer eligible for the draft, he had asked for and received five deferments, four because he was a student and one for being a new father.
I remember stating that you had a Political Science Degree, shouldn't you know this.

It gives the liberals a chance to whine about something that the people in the military do not care about.
BTW - 'Mark' are you using Clinton as an example of a Democrat who got drafted?

Unlike Clinton who actually signed up to join the Army, Cheney got deferments so he didn't have to join and he could continue to pursue his life in politics. Clinton signed up then ran from the draft which is actually illegal and he should have been arrested for it the moment he came back to the US.
