so why do people believe that he will come down on clouds?

The proper interpretation is that Christ's second coming will not be widely known, that is, he will come unexpectedly, as a thief does in the night.

It does say the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory .And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather togeather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other ( Matthew 24:29-31)
Coming in the clouds is mentioned also in Mark 13:24-27.
Also in Acts 1:9-11
Revelations 1:7
In 1 Thessalonians 5:2 states that Christ arrives as a theif in the night, because know one here knows the day or hour, if we did we would change just for his arrival. So therefore we need to be always ready for the arrival of Jesus.

I absolutely have truly some problems with the presumptions made on your question, yet to respond to the question, it really is conserving that it will be unpredicted and undesirable. A thief interior the nighttime is an unpredicted and undesirable element. earlier you pass too a recommendations, notwithstanding, you would pick to attempt to locate any Bible reference (definitely, no longer an interpretation) that announces the "genuine church" will meet Jesus "interior the clouds". The "rapture" is guy-made and not at all Biblical. it really is an interpretation, loosely depending upon some unspecific scriptures and hence, subject to the blunders of guy. because the shape is both unpredicted _and_ undesirable, it really is completely conceivable that the shape has already got here about and that virtually all the international isn't conscious of (or ignores) the shape. The go back will be to Jerusalem and the Jews the position there'll be 2 (Jewish) prophets who've lain interior the streets for quite a few days and the city will be below siege. The temple would have already been rebuilt.

There are a lot of similes and parables used in the Bible. The "thief in the night" means that He will come when no one expects it. He could very well come down on clouds, but do so unexpectedly. I think that's just an image that people have, but nobody really knows what it will be like.

There are two ways to see this:

1) He will come as a thief in the night when the Rapture occurs. Christians have no way of knowing when He will come. During this event, He will "steal" His Bride from the earth.

2) Conversly, at the end of the 7-year Tribulation, only believers will know when the Second Coming will occur (because Daniel 12:11-12 will enable them to calculate it). Therefore, they will be able to prepare. Unbelievers, however, will be surprised by this "thief" and will have their lives taken from them.

It is only during the Second Coming that Jesus returns in the same manner that He left the earth; during the Rapture, He remains in the upper atmosphere and doesn't touch the earth.

EDIT: "Chris P," I agree with you; He MUST be speaking of two different events.

He won't come down on clouds, he will come out of the sky. He will descend the same way that he ascended. It will be as a thief in the night because many (the majority) will not be expecting it, and even Christians don't know the exact day and hour even though they are expecting it.

All analogies have their limits. Jesus' coming will be unexpected like a thief in the night and we do not know the day or the hour, but we do know from other places in the new testament that every eye will see him come in the clouds and it will be an all around earth shattering event.

Jesus will not come as a thief....the Day of the Lord will come as a thief....(1Th 5:2; 2Pet 3:10)

For Jesus Himself said, "“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

(Clouds symbolize the mysterious nature by which He will return...in the same way He ascended into heaven - concealed behind a cloud - see Acts 1:9-11)

What that means is that we don't know when he's coming. When a thief comes into our homes it's unexpected.

Matthew 24:42-44 Watch therefore; for you know not what hour your Lord does come. But know this, that if the goodman of the househad known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the Son of man come.

He went up to heaven in a cloud and the Angel said He would come in like manor. A thief comes when they are not excpected. Jesus will come when people are not expecting. Noah preached for 120 years and then the flood came. People knew it was coming just like we know Jesus is coming. See link below for an in depth look at texts relating to Jesus second coming

Jesus is actually quoted as having said he would come as a thief in the night.

The author of the book of Thessalonians is the one who said he would come in the clouds.

The use of the "thief in the night" phrase was in reference to being vigilant as a believer.. one will never know when he will show up.. it was not a reference to the time of day, as it is also written that no one knows the day or the hour (which could also be a reference to Rosh Hashanah which is known as the day when no man knows the hour).

Clear as mud? lol
