Well, I've seen a few doctors, thought I had many different things and finally my gastrologist informed me that the pain I have in my left side (which feels like it could be the kidney, pancreas, stomach) has something to do with the spinal cord and the nerves that go around the side of the body. Is this really it? I've been pulling my hair out for months trying to figure out what is wrong, doing blood test, usg etc. The doctor told me that all I can really do about it is stretch, exercise, swim and it should get better, is this true? I do admit to being a real couch potato, slightly overweight, constatntly sitting down etc. could this be the cause?

Ask to see an interventional pain management specialist. He may be able to provide you with additional options to help with the pain. He will probably want to do a combination of injections, medications, and physical therapy.

possible - yes

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

I have sciatica which is caused, for me, by some disc's that are compressed and pushing on the sciatic nerve. It runs from my lower back, across my butt, my left side of my tummy and down my leg. It KILLS! I was getting spinal injections for the pain cause I couldnt walk, but now they are going to do surgery finally. This has been going on for me now about 3 years. So it sucks. For me, sitting only makes it worse. If I lay flat then the pain is less. Sometimes people that have it are told to stretch and exercise and the pain will lessen, but that didnt work for me. Good Luck!

Did you have shingles? Post-herpatic neuropathy is very painful. You may have had an outbreak that was very mild--so you may not have known it. Nerve pain like that--that comes around the trunk--is normally a sign of shingles.
