my daughter is over wieght and needs and wants to lose wieght however i am concerned with her doing it in a unhealthy way. how do i make sure she is getting what she needs with out having to take her to the doctor. she wants to cut diet ( food intake ) in to almsot half. ( 1200 calories ) i know she needs to excerise . what is the best excersie for her.

my daughter is 13 and is 235 lbs and is 5'4" she does not eat junk food and she only drinks water some milk and some juice. no soda. her problemis is portion sizes
she plays volleyball and track so she is involed in sports .

my dear lv consultant , it is very true and if you read my question ,she has a protion problem she will eat 4 to 5 helpings at dinner time and when i say something she crys and says she is still hungry . ( that is when the guilt takes over ) i have also found that she will sneak food if i tell her she can't have something she will hide it in her purse / backpack , bedroom . i have caught her eating while locking her self in the bathroom i have taken her to the doctor for this before and he is saying that until she is ready to lose it she will continue to act this way. however i feel deep down that she has to have a eating disorder no normal person hides while they are eating . i don't get on her about eating i try to limit her and when i do that is when she is hiding. so while you are finding this hard to believe y don't you try and help instead of judge like her doctor has done

make nutritious dinner and lunches for her.get her to join a sport. it depends what her personal tastes are, get her to join something she will enjoy.

You should add here her age and weight to have a better idea of how much she must loose.
In general is not that difficult, but she´ll have to follow the diet.
First thing when someone wants to loose weight is to cut sugar:no desserts, ice cream, candies, etc. No bread ( they only good bread is the Arabian one, and yet not a lot). no fried stuff.No pasta.
Aloud: lot of vegetables, salad, meat (yes, meat, because if you don´t eat meat you can have an anemia),water, natural juices, fruits.
Sweeties and co are aloud on the weekends, but it dozen´t mean lots of it.
Very important: three meals a day and for the break es just fruit, no chocolate, no cereals, no fast food of course. Dinner should be not later than 7:00pm, and light.
Sport: best, and fastest, is swimming, burns all the feat. regularly 3 times/week. Or capoeira, fantastic to shape body and mind.
But could also be something she has fun with, or that she´s more curious about: dance, skating.
After loosing her pounds she can start to eat more sugar weekly but only if she keeps on doing sport regulary.

i dont like the word diet. Just change what she is eating. less carbs like pasta, breads and potaotes and lots of veggies and water. A sserving portion should be the size of your fist. Skipping meals or dramatically cutting them can trick your body into thinking that it is starving and will actually store more fat. Speed walking is the best exercise, it is easier on your knees and ankles, you can keep your heart rate up longer as you can speed walk longer than u can run. Thus burning more calories. It is something the two of you can do together, it will be a lot more fun and effective if she has someone to do it with, she will also be more apt to stick with it. Besides it can be a great bonding experience for the two of you. I am glad to hear you are supporting your daughter in this. Good luck and good health to both of you.

WARNING!!! Cutting her caloric intake to 1,200 calories a day is not advisable. That's starvation level, and when a body goes into starvation mode it greedily hangs on to every last bit of body fat it has and starts to metabolize the tissue that requires the most energy to maintain -- MUSCLE. Not good.
Want a good plan that includes diet and exercise and is 100% safe, but is also effective? Pick up a copy of "The Abs Diet" by David Zinczenko. It's a common-sense approach that doesn't require exotic meals or cutting out entire food groups. You can get it at any major bookstore, and it's hard to miss -- the cover is bright orange.

Although you do say she wants to cut her calorie consumption in half, to 1200, which means she is consuming 2000-2400 calories a day. This is probably too much for her, especially if she is not very heavy to begin with. She probably only needs 1800-1900 per day, from nutritious food, not junk food and regular soda. Without knowing her height, weight, frame, and medical history, it's hard to give advice, but check with her doctor and proceed from there.

I find it impossible to believe that a 13 year old has reached a body weight of 235 lbs by eating a diet based on healthy foods.
