Since many of us fear death or should I say fear how we might die since nobody with a rational mind wants to die a painful death.

Many Christians say I have no fear in dying because I know thier is an afterlife and the lord awaits me.

So my question is: How fearful are Atheists when faced with the ultimate end to thier physical life? Since they will only be a memory.
Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:24, 25).

I'm not fearful. Death is natural. No, I dont want it to be painful, but I'm not really afraid of it either. Its gotta come at some point or another. Everybody dies.

I think the life after death thing is really wishful thinking,
and a tad egotistical too.

I have no fear of death, I've been near death dozens of times.

I know that when it comes to life, this is it.
And you have to believe in an elaborate fairy tale in order to know that the "soul" only exists in people, not the millions of other animals and life God created, and the entire universe and earth was created for the irrational purpose of "testing" earth human's "souls" in a reward/punishment system.

Pretty ridiculous. The belief is so small and insulting to God.

I beleive Pol Pot, David Koresh and Jim JOnes made similar statements as Matthew 16:24, 25....

I have no fear of death. The end is the end. Why fear that? I will return to what I was before I was born - NOTHING. Big deal.

I do not want to die in a painful way, but I do not fear death at all. My hisband is a Christian, and he is more afraid of deatht than I Have ever been. I know that when I die I will return to the earth, as a flame that has been extinguised. Nothing more. I am not worried abotu eternal suffering, etc.

I, personally as an atheist, do believe in a form of afterlife which simply has nothing to do with any supreme being.

Regardless, death is not something to fear. As a matter of fact, fear in general is a waste of what precious time we have on this earth. If anything, it is a catalyst for living each and every day to its fullest. There is no purpose in fearing the inevitable.

I don't know of any atheists who actually fear being dead - that's a special fear reserved for superstitious people who believe that in some way they might survive their physical death and suffer in an 'afterlife'. Atheists don't have these irrational ideas and therefore have nothing to fear from ceasing to exist.

Everyone... is equally fearful of death in their own way. Try working in a hospice or hospital where death occurs regular and you get to see it... whether they are Christians or Atheists, when death appraoches and they KNOW it.. there is Fear. We won't know until the moment is here... I have seen totally Spiritually confident Christians, cower with fear and tears rolling ... when they feel themselves "slipping away"

The ones that are able to move on with peace are so far mostly, those who have friends and family with them to reassure them and see them off.

One of the Best things that Christians do is to gather around a dying brother/sister and give them support and reassurance via prayer and praise to God. Thats the most WONDEFUL gift that Christians give to their dying bretheren

One of the Worst things that Christians do is to instil fear in the unbeliever who is dying and trying to convert them, causing them to be restless and confused... and ultimately causing them to die in fear... That is the most VILE thing Christians do to the dying, who did nothing but just not believe in their faith.

I feared it more when I was catholic. Only because I was sure I was going straight to you-know-where. Which in THEIR eyes I was.

I don't fear it any longer - no more so than the next person. Oddly enough, when I've been in situations where I thought I might die, I accepted it. Didn't give god a thought.

About as fearful as anyone else. Your biblical quotation doesn't particularly impress me. I do wish to have some sort of legacy after I'm gone...so that at least a few people in the world would remember that I'd lived. Being forgotten completely into obscurity bothers me more.

How fearful are Atheists when faced with the ultimate end to thier physical life?

Death scares me probably more than anything else. I've been faced with what I thought was my "end".

I still didn't believe in God. Not YOUR god or ANY god.
